Are all 3VZ-E's the same?

Hey guys,

I'm looking at purchasing a 90 or 91 3VZ-E from a 2wd pickup.
I'm wondering if it's a direct bolt up to my 91 3VZ-E 4x4 5 spd. I've heard that there are some differences with the engine over the years but I'm not sure about what they are.

Thanks,
Daniel

The same? No. Lot's of little changes here and there between the years.

Interchangeable? For the most part. Some use different ECUs and wiring harnesses. As far as that goes I believe the 88 is unique, 89-91 are similar, as are 92-95. Don't quote me on that though.

But otherwise there's no mechanical differences that would prevent you from bolting up any 3VZ-E. All we're talking is the motor mounts and bellhousing there. Those are all the same.

Hey! Nice article!

I didn't know that about the distributor pilot hole being smaller on 88-90s. I knew they changed distributors, but had only heard that the older vers. worked on newer engines. I was curious if the newer one would work on my 88. Apparently it won't. Unless I bore the pilot hole out to 10mm.

Thanks for enlightening me!

EDIT: Turns out I'm wrong about the motor mounts too...sorta. Because the motor mounts actually ARE all the same. It's the motor mount brackets that aren't. You'd have to be fluent in 3VZ-E to decipher that from that article though. Which I happen to be so...

I think i heard something about if you get it from an auto tranny then it might not bolt to your manual because the block sometimes isnt machined for the pilot bearing. But that might have been for a 3.4 swap

That would be the crankshaft, not the block. And when I crosscheck part numbers for the crankshafts on manual and automatic equipped rigs they correspond with each other. So I find that one a little hard to believe.
