Air filter n such...what to do

Was cleanin up my 4runner for a trip next week and opened up the air filter...ick...shoulda changed it over a year ago. So what to do...I gotta 95 with a 3.0, I was looking online, and found all sorts of stuff on ebay, but am not sure about what is legit. Some whole kits or just filters. Also found some aftermarket websites (overnightautoparts.com) with some K&N filters for fairly cheap. Or, I could just go to some local parts place and get ripped off and not worry about it. So, a whole new kit off ebay, a simple filter off ebay, a filter off another website (any other suggestions?) or a local parts place.

Also, Ive been lookin for a light bar for the roof or a grill guard for reasonably cheap. Any suggestions of where to look?

Anyone else around central new york or south western part of adirondacks....im gettin bored goin out by myself and to the same places.

Thanks

a simple search would answer your question...go to the tech write up's and just do the ISR mod. its basically a K&N FIPK for like $60. now for a filter, most people stay with the paper filters for offroading because they trap the dust better...but if you do mostly on-road travel i would go with the K&N drop in filter

Wanna talk about getting ripped off? I just paid 40.oo for a stock airbox. And 5 years ago I paid 180.00 for the K&N kit.

Just use the paper filter you won't mind changing that puppy out a few times their cheap.

I've heard K+N's let too much dirt through from several sources I trust...

Just go to Walmart and get a paper filter for $12.95 or whatever and change it once or twice a year or so. I haven't been too impressed with the aftermarket options for air filters.

I seem to recall bobtheoilguy did a nice test of several racing air filters and the amount of dirt they let through in a short time was hard to believe.

I've been running one for years on the dustiest back roads NV has to offer. No problems. K&N has much better flow than the paper filter, and you can clean it when ever you want. It's the last filter you'll ever have to buy. The advantages of a k&n filter out-weigh rumors of poor dirt filtration IMHO. Amsoil is another good choice.

I had a K&N for about three years, but the problem is one day I looked at it in the light and I could physically see holes in it.

I'm going to get a True Flow one I think, I have heard good things about them. Plus once you clean it you can blow it out with compressed air without damaging it. Unfortunately, they don't have a drop-in for the 3.0 though, only the 2.4

How about a factory filter? I put one in and noticed a major difference in the power compared to a dirty paper one. THe factory filters are more lke fabric or fiber glass or something.

OEM filter...wash it out every time you change your oil and rotate your tires...simple routine maintenance makes your truck live a lot longer.

you can wash these suckers? i never thought about doing that. Do you just rinse it with water or use soapy water? I like a nice white clean filter so i just buy them more frequently..Good tip.

That is what I always do to the ones in mine...and be sure to check the air box and wipe up any "oil" in there. When I first got my 87 seems it must have had an aftermarket "oiled" filter in there and the air box was a MESS inside. It had an OEM filter in it that was new, so that is what I assumed happened.

I just do that as part of routine maintenance. Blow the air filters off w/ compressed air, wipe out the air box of dust/dirt (vacuum if need be) and then wash them in the inside kitchen sink w/ soap and water, rinse thoroughly outside w/ the hosepipe and then let them dry in the sun. Takes a little time, but you can do this several times before they start looking ragged. I actually have one extra filter that I always keep clean and then just swap it in when the other gets dirty in the 85 or 87 and then just clean the dirty one for the new extra filter...just rotate them around so I always have one clean one, since I have 2 first gens.

I'll have to second that description.I had a K&N drop in filter for my 98 Ram 5.2 and was nothing but crap. put in a paper one on my last syn oil change and I like it better.
