air conditioner clutch.

Ok I searched for "ac clutch" and got 9 posts about the tranny clutch, "ac" and got nothing, a/c and nothing and A/C and nothing, even tried "air conditioner" and nothing.

So. The AC in my 89 (22re) worked for a grand total of 3 days before the clutch made a yucky sound (grinding) and started smoking. Can I replace just the clutch? If so can it be done in the vehicle so I don't lose all the freon charge? Do any of you have a part number handy.

The local guys want to sell me a new compressor and then I have to get the system redone since I no longer have a vacuum pump.

Thanks bunches.

im fairly sure you can just buy a clutch kit, try searching ebay for the kit and see if their is one, and i wouldent just buy a new compressor, kinda a waste of money to me

Hate to say but I'm kind of agreeing with the a/c shop. If the clutch went like you said, smoking and all, the compressor probably siezed.

abe is right... replace the entire compressor...
not only has the compressor probably frozen, but you will have the warranty with the new part... that will help with peace of mind...
