I searched and I am not 100% sure were to put the aftermarket temp gauge sensor. I don't want to mess up the ECU by removing a sensor that it needs. Is the correct location on the intake manifold between the 2 ports?

 

Yup - thats the one used by the instrument cluster.

Other option is to get a thermostadt outlet from a 22RTE - theres a boss on there - but of couse it measuers the water temp AFTER the thermostadt...

just to clarify

Ont he 22RE there are THREE temp sensors that Im aware of

TWO are used for the EFI
These are located on the forward part of the EFI manifold and poitn towards the radiator. The connectors have more than one pin in them and have small O rings etc.

The one use by the instrument cluster is in the intake manifld by the #3 intake. It has a small "spade" type connector and the connector points "up" towards the hood. Its grounded via the engine ground.

Also - as I pointed out - the 22RTE has a "fitting" on the outlet pipe (the 22RE does not) that can be used to do the same thing..

IMHO - it only reads the same AFTER the thermo opens.

I used to run an autometer "low temp" guage in it and you could watch the thermo open and close until the temp balanced out to a steady state

 

Yes, that's true. My thermostat opens right away (160*) and is open all the time after warm-up.

What manifold? If you mean the pipe that the sensor is in, its descibed a little bit here:

I thought it was a tube with a rolled bead and a welded screw bung... I think Autometer has em but I dunno if they work with Toyota hoses...

 

You can see in this picture I installed an aftermarket sensor on the manifold when I had it apart to replace my headgasket last winter. Pay no attention to the red box lol.
