AFM to MAF

So a few weeks back I went a head and fabed up an intake for my 3.0. Taking a look at the stock AFM (Air Flow Meter) I said to my self why? What a terrible design for air flow and to me it looks like the stock AFM is restricting a good amount of air flow. The stock AFM uses a flapper door which is just funny as all hell being that the center of the unit is square and would cause a good amount of turbulence. Now I know the 3.slow as we all call it isn’t the greatest motor in the world and isn’t probably the best engine to throw money into performance mods. I know there is a company that exist that I read about that makes Hot Wire MAF conversions for trucks. Seems like a great idea, but has anyone done the MAF conversion from junk yard parts? Here are some possibilities.

The AFM on these do more then just air flow. They also turn the COR on and has a temperature sensor in it. You can get around this stuff but I hardly think it is worth the time.

Judging from the first article, you might just be better off gettin a air cone, and leaving the sensor itself alone....?

Don't know about those posted links, but the MAF conversion I made for my truck knocked 2 seconds off the 0-60 time. I used a MAF from a 3.0L Buick.

Custom made converter using a microcontroller.

How much did the whole project cost you? To me it is not worth putting any serious money in a 3.0 for more power. They are one of most underpowered V6's I ever seen. Also the electronics on it suck and so does the fuel mapping. I do not see why people buy headers and the other crap for something that will put out less than 170 horsepower. The easiest and cheapest modification is swapping the VAFM for the Supra VAFM. Any engine that uses a VAFM is poorly designed, but that is my opinion.

u could always go to a MAP sensor

adds performance if that is your alley

From 18 seconds to 16 seconds?

I had most of the parts already. The MAF cost me about $45 from the junkyard.

Yep. The 0-60 went from 18 to 16 seconds. It's won't throw you back into your seat, but it did make passing and getting on the freeway a lot easier.

I could use with a little extra oomph for merging too...last time I clocked my 0-60, it took me 24 and a few tenths of a second to get there. That was with 31's. Granted, it was slightly uphill, but still...

well, i dont offroad so i don't mind

i just wish it could have a higher or lower stance. Besides, what do I really get from outrunning toyota trucks when you can't get past 100 anyway?

i like to see the circut you designed. it would be possible to make a DIY kit. You would just need the circut scematics, and lay them out in eagle cad, and then you can ship it off to this place. http://hackaday.com/2009/03/11/batch...re-a-la-carte/

A prototype is already designed and I have the gerber files to make a PC board. The tooling costs were prohibitive for doing only a few units, so I never had them made.

you should see how many people would be interested in the project, and look into possible group buy. i would be interested, or at least to get this up and running for my self.
can we at least check a picture of your afm to maf hookup?

The connector from a VAFM is the hardest thing to get hold of. I had an old VAFM that I cannibalized to get one. I didn't want to trash the VAFM in the truck or splice into the wiring harness.
