advancing the timing on 3vze

I have read a lot of posts where some advance the timing to 12, 15, even 17 degrees btdc for more power. My question is...doesn't the ECM run the timing advanced as far as it can and backs off if the knock sensor picks up pinging? If so, what is the gain of setting base timing higher?

the ecu can only retard the timing by a certain amount, so if it is set to be advanced that far, the computer can only "bring it back" a portion of that, rather than to zero.
