I have a 22r that runs horrable when cold, if you warm it up and shut it down, wait a few seconds then start it up again it will run great.

You have to shut it down and start up again, you can drive all day and spend hours warming up the truck but it will not run good untill you shut it down and start it up again.

Does this sound like something that could just need adjusting?

I have a whole new carb i pulled off of a neighbors 22r that i can swap in if it is going to need a rebuild, but if it is something out of adjustment i would prefer to fix that first.

has the carb. been rebuilt previously? Have you messed with and of the two idle screws on the pass. side of it? I am just trying to get an idea, my auto shop teacher taught me how to fully rebuild my carb. I can take pics of the screws I'm talking about if you need them.

 

No, the truck only has 120k miles on it and i don't believe the carb has ever been rebuilt. I have not messed with any of the idle screws, and the plug is still on the mix adjustment screw so i know nobody has messed with that. I have a FSM for it and another identical carb pulled out of a working 22r, but it has like 350,000 miles on it and i would rather fix the one that only has 120,000. Thanks for the reply.

Oh, i think it runs ok when i first start it when the engine is cold, i get about 30 - 60 sec of ok running before it starts to really shake and die on me.

 

I dont think the amount of miles on a carb makes any difference as it doesnt really have much in terms of wearing parts.. Besides if the carb was set well enough to get 310 out of it. I would think its a good one.

 

Sounds like the choke might not be opening like it should. Pop the air cleaner lid off next time you start it and take a look at the carb. The correct starting procedure is to pump the gas twice and then start it with your foot off the gas.

The choke plate (passenger side one) should be closed and open slowly as the truck warms up.

If it doesn't, the linkages may just be gummed up, or the choke heater might not be working, or the choke pulloff diaphragm may be blown.

X2, I know what your talking about, Could it be the temp. spring needs to be moved? I know mine did when we rebuilt it.

 

Don't know if this is already handled or not, but I might recommend a test light on the switched hot wire to the choke. If the connection isn't hot the choke won't be able to open and the truck won't run well-- especially when it's cold. Good luck!
