Ive been having problems with my exhaust pipe getting red hot and getting odd rough idles..this is just after finishing my rebuild.

I was told it could be tight exhaust valves. 2 of them were tooo tight. But what concerns me now, is the oil.

Some of the oil in the oil spots are the normal fresh oil color. In one of the pictures, the passenger front side oil area has BLACK dirty oil.. only in that area. Strange? Any ideas? Also..does it look lke im getting oil from the oil holes? Theres doesnt seem to be any new oil from the amount i originally put in the head to start it up the first time.

Excuse the ice crystals all over everything. Its alaska. and its been sitting for a while without the VC on. I'll be clearing it of ice before i start it obviously.

exhaust side will have dirty/dark oil i gets hoter.. also when you do oil change you dont get all oil out so dot worry abought that. but the ice thing you wont be cleaning that off start truck run 4 5-10 min than do oil change toyota bottom ends dont like

I'm a little worried about all the little 'white' spots all over everything... looks like coolant getting in there to me.
And it's on the cam lobes so it's not an old thing left over.


oops, just realized you said you're in Alaska and it's ice crystals.

Do you have a pic of that spot in the front of the head, closest to the radiator, where that bolt to the timing cover hides under a puddle of oil?

i dont. the timing coover bolt is submerged in oil tho. i gave that a lot of oil.

as for the spots.. it got REALLY foggy here for 3 days right after i took off the VC to do the valves. It was ive fog since it was only like 30 degrees. it iced over everything.. thats all that is. The oil is on the intake side though, so it shouldnt be dark lke that... it had oil residue all over the tops of the arms and everrything but only a very thin layer..

lol abec, just read your edit.. ya its ice. im not concerned... and it was YOU who mentioned the tight exhaust valves.... so here i am haha.. the top of the valve cover also had oil residue so i assume its gtting oil..just not a lot...im not sure how much should really be moving into the head.

Im super concerned about the dark oil area on the intake side by the timing chain sprocket.

well, you could clean those areas of dark oil, run the engine some more, and see what happens?
you could have some of the break-in lube and stuff there clouding things up, right?

well i dont know about the break in lube. i didnt rebuild my head... shoudnt the lube only be near the bottom end? i could clean it out and see if it fills again with dark oil..

as for the ice ibeam, ill change the oil soon once i run it again and see how the valve adjustment went.

is that a normal amount of oil though to be in my head oil galleries? it seems like there woud be more and was more when i first took it apart.

as far as you can see though should i strap the VC back on tomorrow and give it a test start?

I think you may have distracted yourself from the more important issue (at the moment).

Tight exhaust valves can cause the exhaust gasses to be hot and in turn cause the manifold to glow. You found 2 valves too tight. Did that fix the manifold glowing problem?

Let's tackle one problem at a time.

yeah oil leavels in head look ok you have to remember that the oil will settle down after it sits and i would not worry but start it up and see whats with the valves the oil in that head looks ok but it looks like you have some old oil stuck in with new oil

yeah its def not old oil in with new. my oil when i blew my HG was really nasty milkshake. the oil in the head was the same milkshake color. normal i presume. the head was empty and i pressure washed it and everything so the only oil in it when i first started it, which is all thats in there now, was fresh oil, which is why its strange that there is a section that is dark black. anyway, ill strap on the VC tomorrow prob and see if it solved my glowing pipe.

edit for clarity: Im assuming that it cant be old oil mixed in with the new because, which i could be wrong, the oil that was left in the passages, if any at all, wouldnt be old black oil. it would be old milkshake oil.

Lol. Hasnt moved since i took it it apart in september. I cleaned off the hood and had it open a few days ago. now it looks like that lol. Who wants to come help!?!
