Adding AC - Need some Guidance

Hello all,

I'm in the process of acquiring parts for an ac conversion on my non-ac 1990 pickup. I've pulled a lot of parts from a 94 4runner that was in the junkyard including compressor and bracket, lines, condenser, cooling unit with evaporator, switch, drier, condenser harness, and other misc nuts and bolts. I have a couple questions:

It appears my truck is wired for AC as an add on. I have the plug for the compressor clutch and the AC switch plugs right in. The cooling unit appears it will bolt right up, however the harness from the 4runner does not match the only empty plug under my dash. What is the difference between the two cooling units? I would need a pinout diagram for both harnesses. Can I make this one work or must I go buy one for a pickup ? If so what years are compatible? I've attached a photo of the harness under the dash.

Has anybody been able to make a 4 runner condenser work in a pickup? I feel that the larger condenser will be desirable with r134A especially with no condenser fan.

Same with the bracket - has anybody used one from a 4runner on a truck? It looks like it may interfere with the power steering pump bracket and motor mount but I have not pulled everything apart yet to test fit.

I would appreciate information from those who have completed this swap - I've read some other threads on this topic but they're low on specifics.

I did a factory AC install on my '91 4Runner. Ordered the parts from a Toyota dismantler and did the work myself.

My starting point was the FSM for parts diagrams and electrical schematics.I remember spending a long time going over the drawings and digging into the truck wiring to figure out exactly where everything was supposed to go. The AC section of the FSM is 37 pages long and covers every detail. I assume the layout is very similar for the pickup. From the FSM info I drew my own diagram of the layout of all the bits and pieces so I knew what was already on the truck and what I needed to order.

On your questions: Yes, most of the wiring harness was already equipped except for a few short bits. The connector in your picture looks like it matches plug A10 from the 4Runner which plugs into the A/C Amplifier, the module that senses a bunch of inputs and decides when to engage the A/C compressor. The cooling unit looks like it has a 4 pin connector (B4 in the wiring diagram).
Not sure about 4Runner to truck compatibility as I just did 4Runner to 4runner.

I have attached the 5 pages on the A/C from the Factory Electrical Wiring Manual which might help you sort things out. The description of operation on page 3 is very useful for sorting out what connects to what. Hope it helps.

Good luck!

Jim G.
