Mine...

I got mine done yesterday. Piece of cake. The cone washers came out easily with a light tap on the outside of the hub. Just had to keep a finger on the end of the stud cause some of 'em fly right out. All I had to do was make new gaskets to go between the hub and hub body. Here they are on...

Lee, should I have done the spindle gear reversal before I put it back together? I'm getting an awful grinding noise now.

I think you can get 'em on eBay for like $40 for a pair.

Also, make sure the listing explicitly says TWO of them. My dad just recently got scammed by some fella who listed ONE manual hub but referred to them in the plural all through the listing. At the bottom it was written in mouse-print that the bidding was for one hub, and the price would be doubled for two.

91: Someone mentioned that Yotayard has them for $40+shipping as well.

Tofer: yeah, I was playing around this morning in 2Lo. kinda cool to have that 'feature' like the old trucks used to.

I generally use it (4wd) here in Upstate NY in the snow and ice, unless I'm out playing. Fortunately we've had a run of warm weather with hardly any snow.

just be careful with the amount of skinny pedal you apply, too much too often and your fan will cause you some grief. dont ask how i know this.

Is there a web link for them? I have Aisin hubs but they have never really worked properly on my 4Runner. Splines match 100%.

Is it www.yotayard.com? I'm a 'tard.

They wont disengage fully. only about last 3/32" of half-shaft is still engaged. I've rebuilt them twice and they still dont fully release. I'm thinking that trying a new set may fix the problem. I asked all the local parts counters and they dont sell the internal parts independently. only as a total unit. I have a feeling that it's a worn main spring causin it to be elongated enough to not disengage the hub.

This route may be much cheaper than $75/hour shop rate.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, check out this article. http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/aisin/ It explains a little bit about the different hubs that Aisin made and the fact that the Toyota IFS hubs has a deeper backspacing than most other Aisin hubs. Maybe that's your problem?

I dont remember the spline count on my truck, but I do know that the inner and outers fit exactly with no gaps or non-engaged splines, so it seemed 100%. I hope it's not as obvious as that.

I may order another set anyway. if it fixes the problem then I'm good to go. if it doesnt I'm only out the hubs+my labor.

I'll call these guys and see what they have.

Thanks for the replies.

Mike

if you have too much grease inside the hubs it will interfere with the proper lock/unlock function. try taking the covers off and eyeballing the amount of grease, if it looks really full, scoop some out. youre only out time and effort and it might be the trick.
