See small bolt head just to right top of tube elbow What the hell is this extra floppy open hose (comes directly off bottom of abs actuator) just above idler arm in photo
Hey all, am happy to say my Japanese 5vz is running great after about 2 years of swap process into my 1990 sr5 4runner. I am quite pleased and since it's a 5 speed I don't think I need to say much more. I'm now going through and reworking things to get the suspension, steering, breaks up to snuff.
I could really use some help with the abs actuator though. My PS steering system was leaking pretty badly and on a drive up to Washington I noticed I was about to run dry. Here is where the Toyota gods laugh at my hubris. Not having owned a leaking Toyota before I was an idiot and bought power steering fluid and added that... A week or two later I realize that is calls for dex 3... And after using 18 oz of Lucas stopleak and switching to AT fluid to my dismay I had found a new leak on the steering gear (where steering shaft entered gear). Cut to today. I've replaced all the lines (high and low pressure and added a filter), steering gear (brand new) and after running for a few weeks without a leak, now a leak has developed somewhere on the abs actuator (red version).
I have looked at the FSM at the abs actuator and searched for days so I'm hoping for some new information.
One thing I noticed (can't find info on it anywhere) is that there is basically a 2 inch piece of hose coming off the bottom of the actuator that just hangs there limp and open as if to be a drip pressure release, but no way to seal it to bleed it. I can't seem to find any bleed info about the actuator itself. Does anyone know what the hell this extra tube is? (Wondering if that's where my rather large leak is coming from). See picture
Otherwise the likely place is the low pressure hose going from the steering gear and is joined by a metal elbow to the low pres hose that continues to the reservoir on the pump. My question is, does the low pressure ps fluid actually run INTO the actuator here or does this metal elbow just act as a secure union and I could essentially omit this little piece of 90 degree metal that will eventually rust, and is likely the problem already (there appears to be a bolt holding the metal union to the abs actuator like it's just a little bracket --not the union bolt, obviously my bad terminology--). If it doesn't run into the actuator at all then I think this is the problem, otherwise I probably ruined the seals on the abs actuator (which seems weird since it can handle brake fluid too) when I sinned and put PS fluid in my PS reservoir. Any help much appreciated. Will post pics for your trouble. Thanks - Cody

Used some permatex atf/tranny gasket maker to seal it back up and have reinstalled in the truck! Tomorrow it will have had about 48 hours to cure (overkill I know but I really don't want to have to take this b***h out again) and hoping this will keep the power steering system sealed
Here's hoping this wasn't in vain and I need to just delete this crappy abs part after all.
hope this helps someone because I couldn't find ˟˟˟˟ about this component. Easy to take apart and I don't care much about the abs delete, trying to drive this thing like a Bentley and there's always the e brake...
Can anyone give me a cheap solution to bleeding this abs system???
Cleaned off the old wax paper? Gasket before I resealed with permatex atf proof gasket maker. Can't find torque specs for the 3 bolts that hold the two pieces together so just got it as tight as I could and reinstalled.
Hi were you able to fix this issue. I'm new to the forum and I recently purchased a 1992 toyota 4 runner 4x4 5 speed manual I'm having the same problem as you were having with the abs actuator. The abs actuator is leaking powersteering fluid threw the breather hose at the bottom of the power steering system. I had a powersteering hose leaking before figuring out the breather hose was leaking and l I replaced it but I cant stop the actuator breather hose from leaking. If you could please help me out it would be really appreciated. Thank you
Unfortunately mine is still as well. I've taken it apart and replaced old seal in the middle with gasketmaker. I tried filling the breather with sealant as well since the first time I tried it was the same problem. May have to replace with a used part or just delete the abs at this rate...

I wonder how difficult it is to delete the abs system. I went to the toyota dealer near me and they said the actuator its self is $1095.00. I might just end up going to a pick a part and see if I can find a good used one. Do you have any power steering issues apart from the leak like hard to turn steering wheel?
There are some posts on here about deleting the abs system. it doesn't seem to be too hard except the custom PS hoses that would run from the ps pump to the steering gear. The PS works fine it just wines and I need to keep refilling the reservoir. I asked the dealer if any of their mechanics knew about ABS actuator and they don't so I think the long term fix is to just delete it. I think I will one from a junkyard for the time being since I don't want to go through the trouble of replumbing the rear brakes and PS hoses but when I opened it up, the two hemispheres were sealed with a wax paper gasket that I'm sure will be failing on any other unit from this generation eventually.
Middle seal Trough/mount
here's some pictures from when I disassembled the abs actuator. Honestly if someone could just tell me what the function of the breather is on the bottom I think I could actually fix it. Like, there is no way to bleed it so does it just auto bleed out the breather? That seems to be why we are both having the leaking problem. So why not just seal up the breather hole? PS I tried and it and it still seems to be leaking
