ive looked all over the site and i cant find anything that will help,
i need to replace the clutch inmy 4runner, i called the shop i uasally go to and ive been going for years and been great to me, but i called them and said the clutch replacement would be a big job 8-9hrs by the and cost me almost a1000$, i asked why, he said they need to pull a ลลลล load of componets and the tortion bars, is this true?, i can understand the transfer case but the tortions? so i think im going to atempt this on my own with a couple of buddys, ive done clutchs before but ive never done a clutch in a 4x4 before.
can anyone help me? tips, tricks, tech articles? anything would be great

While you have the transmisson out you will want to have your flywheel resurfaced and replace the rear main seal.

If you have a 22re motor I feel that you might not have to disconnect the exhaust system but on the v6 motor it will be in the way. I do not know why they show removal of the front differntial but that might be a V6 issue??

When I rebuilt my 22re the differntial was not in the way to remove the motor so I do not see how it could be in the way to remove the transmission?

Buy a haynes shop manual if you do not already have one!

Book time for clutch replacement including replacing rear main and pilot bearing is 6hrs. The front diff and torsion bars don't need to be touched.

Its a pretty simple task, I think the last one I did, 93 22RE, was 4 hours out and in... I was putting a different flywheel in so didnt have to wait.

No torsion bar removal... dont have a v6 cant tell you about exhaust... leave the crossmember attached to the xcase... undo all the bolts you can reach, then the crossmember... with a floor jack lower the crossmember about 4", then come from the shifter hole for the top two bolts... will take a bit of extension, and a wobble 17mm is nice.. but i always get it done with a 17mm std socket...

I did a complete auto to manual swap in my '95 3.0 4runner and did not have to remove torsions, differential, or exhaust. I only removed the sway bar to give me a bit more room. Flywheels can be had for cheap and resurfacing is only about ~$30 so save some time and pain by buying a used one and having it resurfaced ahead of time. It is not a terribly complicated job to do yourself. Get a good torque wrench, jack, a friend to help with lifting, and start on a Friday night. Good luck. It's a rewarding job.

I am going to replace my 98 4Runner AT (4cyl) with an 86 MT (W56).
Can I use my stock 98 flywheel or I need to get a new one?

Your stock '98 4Runner with the auto tranny does NOT HAVE a flywheel.

You're going to need a lot more than a new flywheel

Maybe try an overpriced dealer??? Heck, for 7 hours, we do a clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throw out bearing, machined flywheel and toss in a rear crank seal! Oh, and a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty. Might check out the green shifter bushing while its out. These are always worn out and make for a tought 1st or 3rd gear shift. The torsion bars arent even in the way! Maybe he is thinking sway bar, but you only need to undo the lower supports.

Thats a distinct possiblity, since my father-in-law works for Terex Utilities and they call the massicve swaybars on their bucket trucks torsion bars....

But if you mechanic doesnt know the difference on a regular truck I wouldnt let him turn a wrench on my rig..

The auto uses a flex plate whereas the manual uses a flywheel. There is a monumental difference in design and purpose. I would suggest sourcing everything inbetween the engine and the differentials if you wish to undertake the swap. Wiring will be fun as well. PM me if you need tips.

8 hours seems like a long time for an experienced shop to do a clutch replacement.
