Question 95 4runner OBD?

i can't find the OBD port on my 4runner, checked everywhere behind the dash. can you link the OBD to your computer in a 95? the factory service manual calls for the use of a breakout box at the ECU . anyone know anything about the OBD in 95's? i found this site but it wasn't much help with my problem: http://www.midiwall.com/4Runner/obd.html

im pretty sure the 2nd gen isnt OBD. you have to do some ignition procedure and then interpret check engine light blinks to read the codes.

Stop and read this first before going further!

STOP!! THAT IS THE WRONG PROCEDURE HE GAVE AND YOU COULD POTENTIALLY BLOW A FUSE OR WORSE, AN ECU!!

*Please, DO NOT use that procedure unless you have a 4 cylinder 22r type engine from before 1993, that is the wrong procedure! You jump TE-1 and E-1 not B and FP!!!

Which engine do you have, as there's also one for the 6 cylinder, 3vze engine more commonly found in the late model 4Runners through 1995.

Sorry Scuba, at least if you're gonna offer help, give the complete info and/or clarify which engine the person has before someone blows a fuse or worse an ECU.

3VZE 6 cylinder MFI Diagnostic Post Link: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...e/diagnosi.pdf

Now, just for the sake of arguement, and to prove my point here to Scuba, this is the diagnostic procedure for the 1995 4 cylinder 22r, completely different than the link Scuba gave: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...e/diagnosi.pdf

Really, people should just use the NCTTORA link as that is the one everybody's been updating lately and has the most current free use tech info around, no offense to Roger, but his stuff is specific to his vehicle while NCTTORA covers a lot more: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/

Amen.

A 2nd Gen 4Runner or a 3rd Gen truck through 1995 is actually considered OBD, just it's OBD-1 versus the newer OBD-2. Domestics went OBD-2 as early as mid 1994 but 1995 was a compliance year for imports and Toyota waited until the very last minute to switch over. They even sold the 4Runner through IIRC July, the last of them being mostly 2wd Auto's, of which only like maybe 500 were released, special order only, of those, there's rumored to have been 50 with the 3.4 and R150 as demo or dealership special editions until they could complete the assembly line changeover..(way more to that story though, not enough to post here) with the official timeline being IIRC August 15th(?) 1995 when the first 3rd gen 4Runners began on the Japan line and the Tacomas on the Fremont, Ca (NUMMI) line.

**The rumored run of 50 2nd gen 4Runners (Gold badged Limited Edition's of course, full power, leather, etc-etc) are also rumored to have been the only initial 3.4 engines to not have the headgaskets installed upside down at the Japan engine factory. It was the stuff shipped to the 1995.5/1996 assembly locations that had the error.

History lesson over.

Kelley

Everybody calm down.

Roger's site has the correct information on it, you just have to read carefully.
Namely the part below the picture of the paper clip.

PM's would be a better place to work that out.

In reference to the OP's question, you need to jump the T and E1 ports.

It's not a big deal, over with.
No more hijacking the newb's thread.

I took the PM quote out of your post, no need for that.
I believe you.

So says Mr. 3.4 Swap! *His is a swap, not too shabby though and well worth doing if you have a 3.0 go south on you.

I don't suppose you've taken it to a dealer to throw them a little curve ball yet?

thanks for the info , yeah i guess i'll have to stick with the paper clip and service manual. i have the 3.0 2wd auto, which doesn't work out so well when you get cocky and try to follow a 4wd duramax through 3 feet of snow i managed to do a TPS adjustment last month, which is probably one of the most frustrating things i've done. i posted a thread on it but i didn't get too much feedback. i've been trying to find ways to milk all the power out of this motor but i guess i shouldn't expect too much. i have an album on my page if anyone wants to check it out.

ohh yes... when i was trying to order the 5sp engine wiring harness to match the ECU i got. the parts department at the dealership told me that "this is an impossible swap" and that "in the 15 years he's been working at toyota, he's seen 1 other person attempt to do the same thing but got frustrated and quit."... i kept telling them, no its very simple, just order me the dang part i need.. they kept saying its not possible.. after they had ordered the part i needed, i asked... "I have a front axle from a 85 4runner... i want to put it under the front of my 94, is that possible??" his responce was "no... ummm well i dont know, maybe?! i guess if you had the right tools, and the right parts and everything i guess i could you could" ........ me: "good, order the dang wireing harness, and i'll be back with a 94 4runner with a 3.4 and SFA"

3 days later i drive back, walk to the parts department and said, "i'm a man of my word.... the truck's outside"
