95 4Runner exhaust options
I know that this has been covered a hundred times but I wanted current opinions. Basically, the exhaust on my 95 4Runner is less than desirable. So, what would be a good, quality replacement for it? I can't afford headers though, I'm just a little curious about any experiences with mostly-stock replacement exhaust set ups.

Just figure out what muffler you want to run then go to a local muffler shop and have them custom bend and weld you up a new cat-back exhaust. It's easy, quick, and performs so closely to a $500 mandrel bent system you won't ever know the difference.
I had a 2.25" to Magnaflow 14" to 2.5" out with a chrome tip system bent up and welded on for $130 total including the muffler locally and I love it.
If your shop doesn't sell the muffler you want just buy it onlone and take it to them to do the rest.

I would have someone do it locally with a magnaflow and new cat as well. Use some 2.25" piping, have them mount it as high up as possible, and stop just past the back wheels with a turndown.
I'll show a picture of my setup when I return home this evening/morning.

It's a 3.0 by the way. Thanks for all the input and pics. I've got a magnaflow cat on there right now that I just bolted on about 6 months ago but my muffler sounds like crap. Ovrdrive., you paid 130 bucks for labor and all the parts needed?

Yep. But I'll admit I got a smoking deal on it. The owner of the shop was in a great mood that day I guess. Price out the door including the muffler was $130 total for the cat back...
I didn't buy a new cat though I just had them cut mine out. But I'll leave that subject alone here.
The grease monkey there quoted me $200 but when I went to pay he wasn't there and like I said, the owner was in a great mood I guess.
I spent $1 on a can of silver spray paint for it though... Pretty ain't it?

Before I did my swap I upgraded my cat and muffler to 2.5" and I got the flowmaster muffler. I paid like $200 out the door for all of it. I had to chop from the muffler to fit the shocks/new hangers for the leafs. I put on a new pipe out the rear now. I like the way it sounds not too ricey but definately a deep growl.

The right size pipe for your engine is key, most cars are different. With the perfect size, each exhaust "PUFF" output will push out the other, and so on. I know BMW has done a lot with this exhaust tuning and has found that the right size (Above Stated) will make the engine more powerful and efficient.

And you have it backwards- each exhaust pulse should create negative pressure and 'pull' another out of the engine, not push it. Push is backpressure and restricts flow; pull is scavenging and increases it.
