95 4Runner auto transmission ?

I was just wondering how many quarts my auto tranny will take if I just drain/refill it. I don't have my manual on me. I'm thinking it's something like 4 but I'm not sure. Also, is the newest Dexron compatible with what's in there now? Thanks

you may get a few quarts out that way but im pretty it holds 16 quarts which means you would need to take to a transmission shop and have it flushed

Well it has like 160k miles on it isn't it better to just drain and refill it when you get into the higher mileage?

Mine takes 3.5 - 4 quarts (US) if I just drain the pan.

Dex III ATF is what you want to put in there, and yes it is compatible with Dex II (which originally came in your '95). I recommend flushing it yourself through the tranny cooler lines, using only the tranny pump's power to move fluid through. I did a full flush of my transmissions at home myself using the method I explain here.

I did this on my 2002 4R at something like 60,000 or 65,000 miles for the first time, and I also did it on my 1993 4R at 180,000 miles, and it looked like the tranny pan had never been removed before on that one. For both of them, I noticed smoother shifting after the flush. I don't, however, recommed having a power flush done with a flushing machine at a shop if your tranny hasn't been serviced regularly.

Are you sure dexron III is okay? I've heard not to use because it can cuase overheating.

If you go to Toyota, and ask them to give you ATF for your '95, they will give you Dex III. Your manual will specify Dex II, which isn't available anymore. Toyota replaced it with their Dex III, and yes they are compatible. Just out of curiosity, what kind of fluid were you hoping to put in there, and who told you that you'd overheat using Toyota's recommended fluid?
