First off check the tranny fluid just in case.
Could possibly be some kind of problem with the reverse clutches or bands. I am not really too familiar with the Toyota auto-tranny. If it is a problem like that it will probably need a mechanic to check it out. If it has a lot of miles (which I am sure it does) they probably will want to rebuild it. I dont know if the bands are adjustable, they may be. Lets see if someone who knows a little more writes a post.

I'd almost bet it's not the transmission. Make sure the engine has good fuel pressure -- check or replace the fuel filter and/ or the fuel pump.

We're making the assumption the vehicle has an auto tranny. The runner probably has an A340H or A340F auto tranny. There are no bands in the late model transmissions. All the shifting is performed by hydraulics and electric solenoids. There could be a solenoid going out or some of the hydraulic seals are wearing out. That is,, provided the engine is operating properly.

Not many people describe putting a manual tranny in park or drive. I think it's safe to assume it's an auto. LOL

Which engine?

Done a tuneup (cap, rotor, plugs, wires) lately?

Any idea when the tranny fluid was flushed/changed last?

Does Toyota use a lock up converter? If it does it could be permanently locked up. If that is the case you can unplug the solenoid that allows this to happen. But I am not familiar with toyota automatics. But I have had similar cases with different vehicles in the past. Unplug the wire that controls the lockup soleniod and drive it. The only thing it effects is the gas mileage. You will get maybe 2-3 mpg less.

I don't think so. If it doesn't lock up it won't generate any more heat. It isn't locked up all the time anyway. There are certian conditions that need to be met before it will engage the lock up. So not having it hooked up will not hurt the transmission and it will not generate any more heat.
