94 4Runner & newer wheel swap options

I have a 94 4Runner 4x4 SUV with stock 15inch 6 lug alloy wheels with 8inch offset & 31x10 tires. I have seen opportunities to buy tare off wheels & street tires from newer Toyota 4Runners & trucks. Will most Toyota 6 lug wheels from newer (1996 to 2006) 4Runners or Trucks fit my 94 4Runner? Also, are other wheels from Chev/Ford etc compatible? Is there anything I should watch out for or stay away from? I need new sneakers and if I can get a set of wheels too, why not?

Yes, all those new wheels will work with yours. Seeing as yours came stock with 15's, you don't have to worry about brake clearances like when you try to put 15s on a newer 4runner. You might run into some problems with backspacing and tire rubbing but for the most part you should be fine. All toyota 4wd trucks and 4runners are 6x5.5 so they will all work. Chevys will work but require that you bore out the center or something like that.

Use this link to compare your current tires with the ones you are shopping for.
Your speedometer will be aff a little bit with those tires.

http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

I was recently looking for new rims and tires as well. I got a pair of Tacoma Rims that were 15". They were the split fork style with the tri Y design. They came with Mastercraft (Cooper) Course A/T in 31X10.5X15. I was happy to find these in my stock size.

A couple things to consider. First, if you get a different size rim, you are going to have to also change out the spare. Don't let anyone tell you you can use your spare temporarily. It can tear up the gears on your rig. The tire will be turning differently then the other three. Second, and more importantly (to me anyway) the larger your rim, the less sidewall (height) your tire has. The less rubber you have between the ground and the rim the harsher the ride. That rubber is a part of your suspension and over all quality of the ride.

Keep in mind this does not take into lifting the vehicle into consideration. Thats a hole other ball game.

Just my .02

16's work great on mine. My only complaint is that they aren't wider so that I can easily run 305/70r16's. I think I'll be stuck at 285/75's when I go larger.

Just a heads-up for anyone swaping out stock 15" wheels on your 4x4 94 4runner with 2007 tacoma sport 17" wheels. The front center caps won't fit over the hubs so you will have to shoot your hubs with crome paint to match. Is the 4x4 hub for the 4x4 tacoma sport smaller or is that a totally different wheel?

Good Point. I had to do the same when fitting a set of late Tundra wheels onto my 1990 2nd Gen. For the caps to fit on the front, I had to cut out the center of the cap for the ADD Hub grease cover, and drill holes around the perimeter for the studs to fit through. Then, I sprayed the entire hub with 'hammered aluminum' paint. You can hardly tell. Not a great picture, but you get the idea.

By the way, I love factory take-offs. You can get a set of factory tires and wheels, balanced and ready to roll, for usually less than a set of tires themselves.

What did you do with your old rims? Are they in good shape?
Let me know if you are selling them.

Great, Great, Job! Fitting the center caps on the front wheels. I just came across this problem and didnt know what to do. Thanks for posting your process. I got the polished wheels so it will be a bit more difficult to make it look as clean as yours. I guess I'm going to have to get rid of the cap all together, clean the area with carb or brake cleaner, and spray the center with some type of paint. If youve seen this problem and a solution before, please let me know. Thanks!
