94 4Runner Auto Trans Removal HELP

Ok. I've always been a Ford/VW guy so this is all new to me. I picked up a 94 4 runner SR5 3.0 V6 4WD. Truck is awesome, always liked these things. Has blown head gasket and leaks everywhere. So I'm pulling the trans to do the rear main, oil pan gaskets etc... This transmission is kicking my ass. There are plugs and sensors I cannot remove to save my life, and I cannot find anything to help. I bought a Chilton manual and it was useless. Can anyone lend some help as far as a DIY with pictures? I've been searching for hours and have nothing. On the passenger side there is some sort of sensor that won't come out, and the book says the dipstick is said to be held in with a o-ring but this one is welded in. Also curious if since I am doing the head gaskets would it make life any easier to take parts off of the top of the motor to gain more access??? Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!

All answers are found in The Good Book: http://web.archive.org/web/201208020...autotrans.html

(You probably have the A340H. Look on the door pillar.)

If the dipstick tube is really welded together, you may be able to get it out of there by removing the pan. But, if your 4runner has gone through that sort of "re-engineering", I fear you are in for a lot of surprises in the future.

Did you remove the two bolts holding the tube? One is on the side of the bellhousing, the other is upstream, on the ds manifold shielding. The only sensor you need to remove is the speedo cable. That sensor you are referring to, I'm guessing, has a wire coming out. It had a plastic wire clip/disconnect. It should be among the wires that all connect on the ps of the transmission, just aft of the starter. Michael
