My truck has always surged in cold weather, it idles up as the weather gets colder and when the idle reaches over 1500, It rapidly surges... Any tips??

 

Mine surges too, thought I had it figured out until the cold weather came back. From experimenting I think it has to be the throttle plate position and air bypass valve. I have suspicion that it's just a computer glitch.

 

Mine idles up a little bit more. Here in California it'll hit 100's in the summer then down to 30's & 40's in the winter. Most of that is normal. The IAT sensor will sense the colder air coming in (more dense than hot air) and automatically adjust things such as fuel mixture, idle speed, etc.

Now there might be more going on with the cold weather change than just the normal adjustments of the IAT. Sometimes the accelerator cable with get gunked up an not release like it should, which is increased in cold weather. If you manually open or close the throttle (from engine bay) does it seem to stick at all? Also, go inside with the hood open and watch it open as you press on the gas (engine off). Does it open and close smoothly or tend to "jerk" as it opens and closes?

If yes, you'll want to remove the air intake boot and clean out your throttle body, especially where the butterfly valve contacts the wall of the throttle body. Then take of your accelerator cable on both ends (throttle body and back of gas pedal) and clean out the housing with carb cleaner. Then grease up the cable with white lithium or chain lube while checking for any fraying or abnormal bumps.

 

I've read around and it seems that most people with the same problem have a rusted up coolant line running to the throttle body, here in sc we have temps anywhere from 110 in the summer to single digits in the winter... My truck only surges when I hold the brakes and when the weather is below 40

 

I have an '86 pu with a '92 22re in it and it surges only when I have my foot on the brake as well I'm thinking it has something to do with vaccuum routing

 

I have same problem usually in cold days 50's 60's degrees not to cold here in Oregon. So I'm reading few other threads should take and clean my throttle body. (Believe its never been cleaned
