93 v6 4Runner Build thread / Timing issue

Hi,
I am in the middle of building up another 4Runner. This one's a 93 5spd v6. It has had no power especially between 1900 rpm and 3500 rpm (Yes I know all about the 3.slow but this is not a limitation of the design it is a tuning issue)

I got it for $1700 rust free with mint condition interior. Ran good but couldn't test drive it because the clutch was shot. Had it towed home and spent 20 straight hours putting a clutch in. PO had the head gaskets done, the timing belt and water pump and then the clutch went so he sold it.

Drove pretty good so I statrted using it for my daily 110 mile commute. While driving it daily I noticed a few things that I didn't like with the way it ran. etc.

So I started out with the basics, OEM CAP, Rotor, wires, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, gas cap and a new yellow top with upgraded 2 gauge grounds.

Ran decent but was developing a miss and getting poor mileage. Checked and one of the exhaust valves was so tight that it never closed. 0 compression. Shimmed the valve and got the compression back. Ran smoother but still felt like something was holding it back acceleration wise.

Took a 60 mile drive right after the valves were adjusted and felt this vibrating / grinding noise coming from the driveline. Changed the diff fluid the next day Test drive the truck and the noise was still there. Crap.. The noise was actually the outer wheel bearing on the drivers side. Ok so re-remove the axle and take care of the wheel bearing and what do ya know. It runs smooth with no noises.

So I drive it for another week and then decide to look back into the no power issue. Looking at the distributor, I noticed that it was bottomed out at the end of it's adjustment slot. Hmmm Check the timing and advance with the jumper in place and it's dead on.. Maybe the guy who did the timing belt on this thing had it a tooth off. Tear down the front of the motor and nope. It's dead on. Replace the fan bracket while in there and button it back up. Then Time it by ear with the distributor near the middle of it's adjustment range and it starts and runs perfectly. PERFECTLY! What gives? I'm at a loss? Almost seems like the rubber on the harmonic balancer is getting old and the outer part of the balancer shifter by a few degrees. ? Anyone every seen or heard of something like that? When you set the timing to factory specs via the marks it runs, starts and feels like the timing is retarded?

Next up is a matching 4.88 front diff so I can use 4wheel drive again and IFS locking hubs, along with replacing all front driveline seals and bearings. And strapping on a set of 5 spoke FJ Cruiser wheels w/ 265/75/16 Rugged trail tires. They are 31.6" and should put my speedo back to almost stock.

Thanks,
Kirk

i have never heard of a balancer problem but someone who would know would be DeathCougar. be sure to check the timing without the jumpers on to see if it is advancing. if you ever need an extra set of hands i live in temecula.

I did check it with it jumpered and un jumpered and it is advancing. I really appreciate the offer. Maybe I'll take you up on it when it's time to do the dual cases or the headers and exhaust.. Same here. Happy to help if I ever can.

if it advancing and runs good then it should be ok. headers.... i have the doug thorleys on mine and... i don't notice any kind of increase in power, but they sure do look nice, sound nice and help with the head gasket issue. good luck and thanks for the offer too!

Yeah theres a guy on here in SD selling a set of Thorley's with a complete exhaust with magnaflow cat to go with it. If it's still available I am going to pick it up in a few weeks.

Where do you wheel?

Yeah I searched and found your thread. I'll check it any way but my truck runs great now. Thanks for the advice.
