Let me start by saying I have been searching for this issue for awhile through many different forums. I bought this 93 Toyota last week from a guy in Kelso washington. After I paid I started my drive back down to Medford OR where I live(about 300 miles) I made it 200 miles ish with no problem and the truck all of a sudden totally acted like I had run out of fuel. I put 5 gallons in it and it still would not run. I came back next day replaced the fuel filter and still was having same problem. I towed it back to my house and got it running for about ten seconds with starting fluid which led me to know it had 100% to do with fuel. I then just dropped the tank and replaced the fuel pump. This whole time since it died I can start it and it runs for 2 secs then dies. It's getting fuel before and after the filter so I'm kinda lost on what to do next...can someone help me please?? Thank you oh yeah I also replaced the ignition coil

Jumper your B+ and FP on your check connector
see if that cures your problem.
I would look more at the fuel pump electrical circuit .
Could be the start side of the circuit relay works getting enough fuel to start then the run side coil is open .
could be the relay
could be the wiring some place
Poor connection
the switch in the AFM
see if that cures your problem.

So if I unplug the afm is it possible it will stay running if it is the afm that is the problem?Originally Posted by wyoming9

If you unplug the AFM it will just stop running!!
There is a switch in the AFM that closes when the engine is drawing air (running) if this switch is not closed the circuit opening relay will open turning off the fuel pump.
Safety device if the engine is not running the fuel pump does not need to run.

Before I read this I went ahead and unplugged the afm it reacted the same exact way...fires then dies after 1-2 secs. How exactly do I jump the fuel pump I read that u connect x with z but how do I figure witch is x and which is z? Sorry for the nooby question :pOriginally Posted by wyoming9

On your Check Connector which should be attached to the fuse block on the right side of the engine compartment
It should be marked +b and fp a jumper wire joining those bypasses all the safety circuits for testing purposes .
The circuit opening relay can also corrode mine got full of water.

Yes I did that and it seemed I couldn't hear the pump turn on...it's got a brand new pump in there...but my truck still makes that loud buzz when u have your key in the ignition and it makes it hard to hear anything other than that but to me it didn't seem to be turning on....could be ignition switch????

put the jumper in and try starting it, and see if your issues go away. If so its the circuit opening relay, or the afm signal going to the relay. If not its something else

Could be physical damage to the wiring
Something that should have been checked during the new pump instyall.
Just which brand pump
Poor pressure out of the box??
Kinked line by the fuel pump bracket It happens quite easy.

I did the fuel pump jumper and can hear the fuel pump run continously and still having the same problem...what's next now? I also tried to see if I could get a code to pop up but when I connect a jumper from TE1 to E1 I don't even have a CEL coming on not even a dummy cel...what does that mean?Originally Posted by wyoming9

Also I bought the pump and strainer from Autozone...all the wiring was checked and seemed fine...also when I start it at anytime if I touch the gas pedal it Wil immediately die but if I pump a few times and then start it will run for 2-3 secs before dying...Originally Posted by Nineonerunner

We still don`t know the fuel pressure we know the pump is running
if you can hear it going back via the return line.
Check fuel pressure !!
If that is good
The injectors need to be checked if they are firing (noid lights )
Did this truck sit for a period of time before you bought it??
I can`t keep up do you have Ethanol in your gas ??
Rust in the injectors is possible .

Where do I test for fuel pressure on this truck? Also it wasn't sitting at all and I also drove it 200 miles before it completely acted like it ran out of gas and since then will only fire for 2 sec then die. I can't imagine all 4 injectors die at once...and the 2 secs it does run it sounds completely smooth. At this point If the fuel pressure checks out it would have to be something that shuts the fuel pump off for safety reasons...what are the things that would tell a fuel pump to shut off?Originally Posted by wyoming9

when you use the jumper from b to fp it bypasses all the pump safeties. with that jumped the fuel pump will run as long as the key is in the on position.

There's the easy way, and the right way. The right way requires replacing one of the fuel rail banjo bolts with a schraeder-valve thingy like the one in this kit: https://actron.com/content/professio...ure-tester-kit In theory you can do that with the plenum on, in practice, I cannot. Note that you MUST use new crush washers every time you install the schrader valve (so just leave it on).Originally Posted by Nineonerunner

The easy way is to just disconnect the fuel return line at the FPR; put a 1/2" tube (I prefer clear) into a bucket. When you jumper B+ to FP you should get about 1/2 liter/min. Technically this doesn't check the FPR, but that unit fails rarely, so if you're getting enough flow your pump and filter are fine.

The FP line goes direct to the pump; if you power the pump from there, nothing will shut off the pump. Without the jumper, the pump is powered by the COR, which is closed with the STA signal from the ignition switch, and held closed with the FC signal from the VAF.Originally Posted by Nineonerunner
