Question 93 4Runner Transmission

Hey Guys,

Big problems. My 93 4Runner (first vehicle I ever bought which we still love today) is having Transmission issues. Started with a wining noise which continued getting louder over a week or so. This weekend stopped pulling (when hot) and no more noise. After it cooled it would go, but noise was bad, so we just moved it 100 feet into garage and parked it. Have been making calls for 5 days and no one wants to mess with it and I can not find Remanufactured unit anywhere. Have been told the transfer case is built into trans and it's one of the worst to work on.

Me and my Boy work on it ourselves and it runs great. My dad was a mechanic and I worked there till I moved out for college, still have the shop that we play in so I'm not scared to do anything - but never messed with a Automatic Trans. The boy loves his old truck and I can't believe we going to have to Junk it.

Vehicle Info is:
1993 4Runner SR5, V6 - 3.0; 4WD
Vin: JT3VN39W4P0119667

Any Ideas - please speak up.
Anyone know where I may get a Remanufactured unit?
Know anyone I can send it to to be rebuilt?
Can I get a good rebuild kit? - think I can tackle it myself??

Not an authority sounds similar problem I had w/ 1990 T4r w/ auto, 4x4. Found a reputable local transmission shop, took some research and had the vehicle towed to the shop, and yes on mine the transfer and trans come as a unit, dilemma whether to replace or rebuild.. Could not get motivated to remove and install a transmission so went with rebuild, it was not cheap but now gong on 3 years and seems to be running fine.

Initially had a mobile mechanic take a look and some $400 later found he could not repair the trans and subsequently decided to bit the bullet?

I would go with lastcall's suggestions. Look for a local trans shop wherever you are. Probably a good idea for them to tell you if you even need a full rebuild or not. Edit: I see you've already called around. Go to next step:

Not as familiar with the auto trans but it's pretty easy to check fluid in these so that's what id do first. My guess is you probably ran low on fluid over time and burnt it out. I think Marlin Crawler sells transmission assemblies. They're pretty expensive and idk if they have autos come to think of it. But I know there are several on ebay depending on what specific one you need. Could always get one of those and swap it out while you rebuild the original.
