93 4runner speedometer issue

Hey everyone,

Ok I finally got my 4runner going. After a marathon engine rebuild and misrouted vacuum lines she ours pretty good. Get her on the road and there is no speedometer indication. Mileage is not ticking off. Trip Meter is not advancing. Tach works great. All other cluster indications are working. Just no speedo.

Is is the first time I have seen it run. I bought it for $500, not running.

Had some lights to replace, so I pulled the cluster out to see if the speedo cable had been disconnected. This must be an electronic speedometer, because there is no cable back there.

So my question is where does the speed indication come from and how do I reconnect it. First thought is that the previous owner disconnected it. I am hopping that is all it is.

Thanks guys for any help.

Pardon all of the typos. My autocorrect thinks it knows more than I do.

Run a search on vehicle speed sensor. A few threads, atleast, talking about it in detail.

It's on the end of the transfer case tailshaft, btw. Passenger side. Three wires to it. Can't miss it.......unless you have dirt in your eyes.

Found it on the back side there. Not disconnected. So looks like I get to replace it. Thook, on one of the other post ins someone was referring to 2 speed sensors, one of which was $300. I believe this tranny only has one and it runs $120 or so from rock. Is there something else I am missing.

You should also have one in the middle of the tranny on the driver's side. Look and you'll see it. The one on the tailshaft, though, is the one responsible for the speedo/odo/CC operation, though. Both are used by the ECU for shifting, but the no. 2 in the middle is purely for ECU.
