So I recently bought my 93 4runner 22re auto locking hubs and the 4wd worked at the time.
The outer CV boots are completely bust, and inner boots just cracked after some recent 4wd use. I used the 4wd a couple times but I dont remember any 4wd light in my dash, that has never worked.
Recently i went to drive out my house and knew I needed the 4wd so I engaged low and proceeded to make my way out when I couldnt, just spinning tires...even though the truck feels like it was in low gear and crawling along. Reverse back down with no luck in future tries. After attempting to go 4 hi then changing back to 4 lo my truck couldnt even make it up a small gradient in 4 lo I had to shift to 2hi to make it up that hill? any ideas

If the 4wd light does not come on in your dash, then chances are unless the bulb is just burned out, you're not really in 4wd. Your truck should be equipped with ADD (most are) and if that front diff doesn't engage, then you're basically jsut switching from 2wd hi to 2wd lo.

basically my front tires dont seem to be getting any power. What makes the front differential engage? the actuator?

Correct. The front diff is "activated" with a vacuum valve above your passenger front tire. Here's what I would recommend doing...

You will see a plug on your front diff with 2 wires going into it. MAKE SURE you splice these 2 wires together, or your 4wd won't work.

You could try unplugging this, and 'connecting' these 2 wires with a paper clip. Then move the shifte to 4wd and see if the light comes on in the dash. If it does, you should be good. I haven't gotten around to defeacting the ADD shi t yet, mostly becasue i'm too lazy. But my sensor died, and I had to connect those 2 wires together to maek 4wd work again.

when you say splice the two wires together, do you mean to cut them where they meet the plug that connects to the diff? and then splice th together? how do you then connect the plug back in if you just cut them where they run into the plug?
I also easily unplugged the plug and it looked all cherry inside, when you say connecting do you mean to, unplug, cut and slice the two?

wow... um... try this. Unplug the connector, stick a paper clip in both terminals of the plug (The wire side, not the plug that is a part of the diff.)

let me know what happens when you try to shift into 4wd

its all good, I found a broken vacuum line, one of the VSV, put a new vacuum hose and 4wd is running again. Thanks for helping
