92 4runner headlights won't work

I replaced the battery in my 92 4runner and short thereafter the headlights stopped working. I've double checked all connections at the battery and they're good. I checked the headlight relay and it's working fine. If I use the "flash" lever on the colum I get the highbeams to work. Otherwise all other lights work fine. Just the headlights are out. And the blue high beam light on my dash is on. I think that's telling me I have headlight problems.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot? I'm thinking the the headlight switch on the colum is bad but when I switch it on it does engage the headlight relay and there is power coming from the relay when it is engaged. There may be two flashlights and duct tape in my future.

Look in the FSM, there should be a way to test the head light switch.

I've got it boiled down to either the switch or a bad ground connection. I'm just going to replace the switch, if it isn't incredibly expensive.

Like I wrote, I am getting power to the headlights but they're not turning on. The wiring diagram shows the ground side of the circuit going through the switch so I figure that's where the problem lies. Thanks for the suggestion but I only have the crappy after market manuals and they're not much help.

Well, the dealer wants $112 for the headlight switch. I decided to troubleshoot this situation and here's what I found.

There are two parts to the headlight circuits. One is a relay that is switched on and provides power to the headlights. This is all working fine.

The second, the high and low beams are controlled by switching the grounds. I looked at the connections from my switch and the ground wire, white/black is scorched at the main connector. The connector has a "burn" stripe going through it. So there has definately been some problems with this ground. I am guessing that there has been a short to the ground wire causing it to fry.

Any further ideas out there? I'm thinking of installing a toggle switch and bypassing the combination switch all together.
