so my speedo decided to stop working 3 weeks ago. i unpluged it from the tail shaft of t/c the gears feel fine. i un-plugged it from the back if the instrument cluster i dont know what im looking for as far as wether or not its broke or not. i got a C.E.L sensor code (42) lastnite probly. being a cable speedo and the cel being triggered leads me to belive the problems behind the cluster but i dont know what to look for it was plugged in lol. 3vz-e motor, 5 speed tranny r150f and cable speedo. Thanks guys im not to familiar with spedo cables and cant find much online. can i pull the cable straight out of the rubber casing with the dash all put back together lube it up and will it go straight back in?

 

It sounds like the cable isn't the problem. If you disconnected it and got a VSS code, 42, then that's telling you that with the cable connected that it's atleast spinning the VSS. Which is located in the combination meter together with the speedometer and the odometer. Those three components are inseperable from each other as far as being able to replace or repair them individually. What's likely happened is that there's no longer a mechanical connection after the VSS, which is first inline behind the odometer and speedometer components of the assembly. So to solve the issue with the speedometer itself you'll then need to replace the entire speedometer assembly.

Just to answer your other question, no, you won't be able to remove the cable from the sleeve. Let alone reinsert a new one. It also has to be replaced as an entire assembly.

If you need to find the part number of the speedometer assembly for the specific combination meter that's equipped in your rig I'd suggest looking on ToyoDIY.com. It will be found under the heading Electrical, sub-heading Meter.

The speedometer assembly is not a cheap part. It will run you upwards of $135 to replace. But you can also find used combination meters, that will already have it included, on ebay for much cheaper than that. I know this because I've been looking into replacing mine to solve an issue I've been having with my VSS.

 

or you could just swap in another gauge cluster for about $20 from a junkyard
