91 pu driveshaft problems
#1
Hey everyone just yesterday driving home I had a terrible shaking then truck sounded like gears were grinding, and then put it in gear and nothing happed no moving and a slight grinding sound. So I thought right away the tranny was bad. I banged around underneath to find that the rear driveshaft had separated right around the carrier bearing. I looked even further back on the driveshaft and saw that the slip yoke joint, (I believe thats what it is called, It is the part you see expand when you grease the rear driveshaft) was compressed all the way and looked like no grease in it. I got a grease gun pumped as much grease in as I had and got it to go in a little bit. I could not drive more than 10 mph home because it was shaking terribly. Is there some sort of spring or seal in the driveshaft that could be bad? Any thoughts please let me know I need to get my daily driver back up and running.

There is a nut that holds the front section of shaft in the carrier bearing. Sounds like the nut came off alowing the shaft to pull out of the bearing. If you pull the rear shaft off of the carrier bearing you can see the nut. There is nothing to the slip shaft. It is just a splined shaft that runs on the other splines. This is just to allow the shaft to get longer or shorter when the suspension moves up and down.

I'll check then when I take it apart. I did replace the carrier bearing once, I remember what you are talking about it is a nut that has like a piece of metal you have to bend down to lock it in? It seems like there is a bad seal on the yoke or something, there is grease coming out of the back of it and it has never done that in the past. The drive shaft before I put the grease in was all the way compressed and you could not see any of the shinny part of the driveshaft. When I put the grease in it expanded and moved into position but didn't have enough to fill it up right now. While I was putting grease in it was coming out of the back of it which makes me think there is some sort of seal in there which I am not sure of. I hope this makes sense to someone

You may have put to much grease in there. If you undue the rear U-joint you can just slide the rear section off. It just sits in there. Nothing turns or does anything in there, the grease is just to ease the sliding action. It does not need much. If you fill the shaft with grease and the seal is to good then you get a hydraulic force when the suspension moves which puts presure on the carrier and pinion bearings.

Thanks for all your help. I got some new hardware and it was the nut that came off that caused this. I put a new support bearing in because it was damaged when we towed it alittle bit. I think I am going to eventually put in a 1 piece driveshaft when I get a chance and find someone to get one made for me. The support bearing makes a squeal after driving for a minute and I think it is due to the lift that is installed. (4 inch suspension) Thanks for everything.

What is wrong with it? why do you not like it? MY carrier bearing is sqeaking like a bastard right now. If I change to a 1 pc driveshaft would I have to change the driveline angles if so how? I'm ready I've got to get my toyota's issues straightened out.
