I just bought a 1990 toy pu 4x4 with about 272xxx miles. Runs fine, drives fine except for when driving and sitting in neutral with the clutch out there is a grinding noise sounds like coming from the trans. If i push the cluth in the noise quits. Im pretty sure its the throw out bearing, but thought maybe there is/was common problems that you guys mite know about. How big a deal is it to drop the trans and put in a new throw out bearing in? What do you all think?

Also the body is rusted out pretty bad, and it already has a flat bed on it. how much trouble is it to put a differnt cab on it. Will a extended cab fit on a regular cab chassis?

Any help would be great even if its not about this particular topic, i.e any typical things to watch out for or do to prevent any future problems.

Sounds more like a pilot bearing. Same amount of work though. If you are mechanically inclined, plan a weekend on it. As far as the cab goes, that has to be a lot more work, and I don't think they are interchangeable. How much rust are we talkin? Betcha mines worse.

 

i can see underneath both doors and they just kind flop around in the wind, and behind the seats in the corner on both side on the back of the cab its rusted so bad i can stick my hand through to the outside.

 

Told ya mine was worse. In the corners like you mentioned, my mounts fell through, at your feet in the drivers seat, the floor fell through, the fender is disconnection at the bolts by the door, among other things.

throw out bearing, either way you are dropping the tranny

 

The throw out bearing is not being used when the clutch is out (when the noise does happen). The pilot bearing is being used when the tranny is in neutral (when the noise does happen). The throw out bearing is being used when the clutch is in (when the noise does not happen). But yes, the tranny is being pulled and both are being replaced anyway.

ok now my next question is how hard is it to get the trans out? Ive heard that the top bolt on the bell housing is a pain to get to, is that true, and if so is there any tricks or tips?

 

Drop the crossmember down an inch or so by loosening the bolts that hold it in place.

 

Get about 2 feet of extensions on your ratchet and have a partner guide you to the bolt via the shifter hole in the cab.
