90 Pickup died, replaced dist, now barely runs!!

First post here so please be easy. Im no toyota mechanic, but not completely automotive disables either.

Toyota in question is a 90 pickup 4 cyl FI 4wd.

Truck has a recently fresh rebuilt motor. The owner was driving the truck down the road and it just cut off. Crank it as much as you wanted it was completely dead!! He had it towed to a local shop that gave him a super high estimate to fix. Long story short it winds up at my shop. No fire, checked coil etc... finally isolated problem to the distributor. Got a JY distributor and installed with poor results. The truck now will barely start and run for maybe 10-15 seconds. Touch the gas and it dies. The whole time its running its barely running, missing, spitting etc. I checked and rechecked the dist. install and its timed and installed correctly.

What could be the cause of teh super rough running condition? Im almost leaning to replacing the Ignitor on top of the coil? Do these go bad? Common problem when they fail? Seems weird that truck was 100% dead before the dist. replacement, but now it will fire and barely run. Any help? I dont know much about these pickups! Thanks!!

Check the AFM, if the AFM is unplugged or way out of spec it will do that. Vacuum leaks can make it idle rough, maybe not as bad as you're describing, but rough. Also check ignition and cam timing just for good measure.

I don't know the test procedure off the top of my head, you might be able to find the FSM pages online, but I know you can't bypass it. I believe the AFM tells the ECU how much air is going through it and the ECU tells the injectors how much fuel to squirt accordingly. If you even pull the intake tube off the throttle body or air box it will barely run IF it runs.

The cable to the airbox (AFM) must be hooked up. Make sure there are no leaks as these trucks will have problems with air leaks. I dont know how to check the Igniter.

Might want to check your grounds...Link... https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-guide-194413/

Here's an AFM test procedure.
