90 4Runner Low power and gas Millage...Ideas?

Hey guys. Someone suggested that i start a thread about the issues i am having with my Runner. I have had it now for about 3 months and it runs very well with only 105k miles and was very well taken care of by the P.O. Ok here is my setup

1990 4Runner
32" mt's
3.0 V6
everything else is stock as far as i know

My problem is that i am only getting about 10mpg's. Doesn't make much difference if i am on the HWY or in town/off road. This is my first 4Runner
so i didnt know what to expect with the bigger tires. I just figured it was normal untill i saw other people doing better with the same/bigger tires.

Second thing is that when i am on any kind of incline i have very low power unless i really rev it up at the start. Maybe i am just not getting the rpms up enough? what rpms do you guys leave a stop at and shift out of 1st?

On the street with flat ground it does just fine and really this isn't THAT big of a deal but would sure like to get some more MPG's

I have run a can or 2 of injector cleaner and some seafoam in the intake/gas. the seafoam seamed to help the idle. Could i have poorly working injectors? Maybe a clogged/low flowing Cat?

Im thinking about getting a good set of headers and will have the cat looked at by a pro in the next few weeks.

maybe all this is normal? Would love to hear what you guys are getting and waht your thoughts are on this matter.

Thanks

i have the same generation and run the same size tires. the manual says to shift from 1st to 2nd at 15mph, 2nd to 3rd at 25, 3rd to 4th at 40, and 4th to 5th at 45. or about every time you hit 3k rpm. as far as gas mileage i'm not sure. are there any odd sounds when driving?

Thanks for the shifting info!

No odd sounds at all. very smooth running.

Wow, 10mpg does seem a little low, even for the 3.slow gas-aholic.

Bigger tires throwing your miles off? Could be some of that.

Also, I would think it could be a fading 02 sensor, water temp sensor and/or poorly working EGR valve. The 02 sensor can slowly fail (over 20 years) and not throw a code.

On another note, a while back I started shifting my T around 2500K when possible instead of winding it up. I think it saves quite a bit of gas. I'll check the manual to see what they say there.

I also recently did the Mercury Villager electric fan swap which I believe helped 1-2 MPG.

There ya go, 'E', ...see what I mean?

.....Ok, so, go through my PM and start to verify/diagnose some of that list from your Process of Elimination(P.O.E.) ..... ok?

As you do, start sharing, here, what you've found(results of the tests, ideas I gave you). Ya know what I mean?

I'll copy and paste some of what I posted in PM for you to check, ....maybe it will spark some ideas with these 3.0 guys, .....one of which I am not, haha.

Best wishes,

Mark

One thing I think you're going to hear alot(which I hear in regards to my 22re, all the time, hahah)...is, "Dude, ....it's a 3.0, they're gutless to begin with!". .....Which is partly true, compared to the 3.4, it's a dog. However, I know a good guy on these threads(I'll let him share if he wants to, lol) who is getting great mileage AND performance out of his, considering what it's capable of, of course.

10MPG IS LOW FOR 35's!...., I'll bet you dollars to donuts. Lack of power AND bad mileage?.....Agree with above statement, as I said in my PM, "Check your 02 Sensor, CAT, Injectors, intake for leaks, TPS, fuel leaks(?), possibly fuel filter, etc., ...... and write down your findings according to the FSM or Haynes or whatever, ok?

Ahem...

Yes, document what you find. There are many of us with these 200k + miles 3.0's that would love to know how to get some of the power back. Share the wealth!

And ChefYota... can ya send that PM my way? Same dealio here.
