89 sr5 3.0 idle problems

about a week ago i bought a 1989 sr5 3.0 4x4 for a winter truck for 1000 dollars. i thought it was a pretty good deal and i really didnt want to drive my mustang in the snow. when you put the truck in drive or reverse it shakes but it is fine when its in park or neutral. it also runs fine when you are driving. it is just when your sitting at a stop light or stop sign. when i got the truck the wires and the air filter was replaced. yesterday i put ngk g power plugs in but it didn't really help. i have no idea what it could be. im new to the toyota trucks. any help would be appreciated.

I'm a manual transmission guy myself, but the motor is going to be working harder when you're in gear. Does the idle drop too low when it's in gear? If so, you may want to just raise the idle a bit or deal with it. Good luck!

flush the tranny.. if it shakes when in reverse or in gear but not moving I suspect the fluid in the tranny is dirty. probably a good idea anyway on a used truck. peace of mind...

im having the same problem, my 4runner comes very close to stalling out while in drive or reverse. I'm thinking about just bumping up the idle for now but id really like to figure out why it does this.

i am going to try to bump up the idle because it drops when the load is put on the motor and hopefully that will fix it for now.

I'd check out your VAF meter, the air intake part. My truck idled roughly for a while and after replacing spark plugs, wires, and cap/rotor, it still idled roughly. Get some carb cleaner or just WD40 if nothing else and spray it inside the "flap" of the VAF. It's where the stock air filter is located.

Always a thought!
