88 Toyota overheating no leaks

Okay so usually it will get decently hot when it's warming up then go back down to normal temp. Not this time it just kept getting hotter and soon in the red zone. It has fluid and it's not leaking. It was smoking from the back of the motor. Does anyone have an idea what this could be? Tried driving around the block and it didnt have full power and make a slight crackle noise when shifting. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you so much it's an 88 truck with about 200k

Was it steam, white or black smoke? Is it the 22re or 3.0? I had my distributor bolt to come out and the timing slipped on it. Smoking could just be an oil leak?
