88 3VZE Throttle Position Sensor Replacement

Hey guys,

Been having a hard time passing smog this year, last few times i have been close to over on NO, but this year I'm finally over the limit by a bit. Everything else is good.

I have been doing some general maintenance and one of the things I checked was my TPS. Which I according to the test I did, is bad. I used this guide on 4Crawler:

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml

Mine was out of adjustment according to steps 1 and 3, so I went through the adjustment process and still failed step 5. Connecting VCC and E2 gives me no readout, I believe the circuit is broken internally. Which is a go or no go item according to the guide, only options are to replace the TPS.

Local toyota dealer wants ~170$ for a new TPS. I also found them as cheap as $70 on Rockauto:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...596&cc=1277614

If it weren't for the 100$ price difference I would probably not have given it a second thought and just ordered the Toyota one, but its more than double.

Have any of you had any experience with that brand, standard? Is this part worth only going OEM on? I haven't had to replace it ever before. Thanks for the advice guys.

That would be a good option too.

One question for anyone who is very familiar with the TPS and how it can affect the engine. In what way will the failed test of VCC and E2 be noticeable? After adjusting the TPS and my idle the truck shows no symptoms of anything wrong. All other ohm tests of the TPS come in within spec. Even jumping the e1 and t1 diag connection lowers my idle properly.

Edit:

Well it seems to be working fine. I tested it again the next day and working perfectly. User error? lol
