88 22r Starting Problems

I have an 88 Pickup with 22r. All original w/118, 000k miles

Problem.

Crank crank, no start until i spray fluid in the crab, then runs like a champ. Later after turning off and letting sit for a few minutes will re-start but with a few seconds of crank.

What can be the problem?

I've done
Plugs
Fuel filter
Oil change
Air filter

i had the same problem with my 84 22r, i put in a new fuel pump, and that didnt seen to help, did you replace the fuel filter by the gas tank?

pull the fuel line and crank it to see if gas shoots out immediately, if not check all the fitting for leaks and cracks in the fuel pump diaphram, if gas does shoot out it could be an ignition problem or fuel mixture problem, good luck

'edit' Superbleeder beat me to it.

Sounds like the carb needs to be looked at. The acceleration pump and/or the aux acceleration pump use rubber diaphragms that will eventually fail. These pumps spray fuel into the airstream when you push the gas pedal down and provide the only fuel until the engine starts up and fuel begins getting sucked into the airstream at the venturi. A carb rebuild kit will include new diaphragms and other seals and gaskets. Clean all the passageways with carb cleaner spray and replace the rubber parts and float.

Since it runs well after it gets started there's a good chance those pumps are failing.
