I am trying to help my neighbor fix her truck 87 pickup auto. It starts out whining and once you get a little speed it starts making a terrible klanking grinding sounds like its going to fall apart. the gears still change smooth at least 1st to 2nd I wouldnt want to go any faser. I looked under and shook parts.I cant see anything obvious. Any advice? I CAN SEE NOBODY WANTS TO TOUCH THIS ONE.

 

its not in 4low by chance is it? I had an 87 that had a bad rear axle that made some funky noises and clunks while driving. Could you toss it in neutral while its happening to eliminate the transmission? Or maybe you could try removing the rear drive shaft and running it in 4 wheel drive to try to figure it out. Maybe a chowdered wheel bearing or hub?

 

I should have specified her truck isnt 4x4 but putting it in nuetral is a good idea I dont know why I didnt think of that.Thanks At least now I have a starting point.
