smoke coming from the engine itself? hmm.. was it coming from around the starter? if so, it's probably the wiring getting hot from the current being drawn by the starter and compounded by the weak battery
do yourself a favor if you can- charge the battery up well. low voltage can cause lots of problems starting a car or truck like yours cause you have all these things drawing power: computer, fuel pump, ignition coil, starter... all at the same time

if you want to do a video, sure by all means. it can't hurt.
as I said, a weak battery can cause starting problems. and depending on other things, as the starter trying to start and the voltage drops the amperage (current) goes up and this causes wires to get hot.

It sounds like you've got it starting up now, so my next concern would be to make sure you actually have oil pressure. I would first use a multimeter to check the response of the gauge sending unit. If it's working right then it could be wiring or the gauge. If you don't get a response, you should hook up a mechanical gauge where the dash gauge sending unit is. Hopefully you do have pressure and it's just an electrical issue. I know from first hand experience that these motors will drive around with little to no oil pressure.

If you haven't changed your oil yet, you may pick up a bit of pressure when you do.

i'd say either 5w30 for below 0c temp or 10w40 above 0c. brand? hmm. I don't have a fave and neither do my trucks. popular opinion says to stay away from the high-mileage oriented ones. I'd probably go with the cheapest first just to be sure the oil pressure does get better.

Oh okay, yeah i live in Calgary in Canada, the winter is hella cold, but summer is very nice, so il probley go with 5w30, so stay away from the high-mileage stuff?
I had planned, since the oil in my truck right now is like molasses im going to go to walmart and buy 2 oil changes worth and two filters of the cheapest stuff i can buy. then ill run it trough the system couple times, then go back out and buy some good quality stuff. What could cause problems if i did have no oil pressure? would i be able to tell if anything was wrong?

low oil pressure would most likely be caused by either a worn oil pump or stuck pressure relief vavle (which are both in the same housing), or simply by an old, worn engine where all of the bearings are worn out.

How is your oil level now? Are you low? If so, change the oil filter and top the crankcase up with oil, but use Dexron II ATF for the last 1/2 quart / .5 litre and run it a few miles (maybe 20 miles or so... how's that figure into kilometers? lol), before you do the oil change.
If you're not low, when you do the oil change, replace 1/2 quart / .5L of regular oil with Dexron II ATF and run it til you do the next oil change.
No Fear! Dexron II ATF has a weight of 0w-5w so it's not going to hurt anything and has an arseload of detergents to help clean up the oil system (it's meant to be in transmissions where crud is even more bad than in an engine).

why is it stupid to have the truck running for you have the heater working? You know that the heat comes from the radiator water right?
