I've got a 1987 4Runner. I'm looking to install an elocker probably from another Toyota. I know I can modify the housing to fit a 3rd member elocker from another axle.

My question is:
Are there any complete rear axles with elockers from other generation 4Runners or Tacomas that can be swap out? Are any of the axle lengths the same? Can axle shafts be inter-changeable? What problems would I run into swapping a rear axle from a 2nd 3rd or 4th gen 4Runner or any of the Tacoma trucks?

In the axle section, it looks like the Gearing, Width, Ring Gear Size, Shaft Size, and Spline Count were the same on some models. I guess I'd just have to find an axle that had the same stuff.

 

Basically the Tacoma axles, which are 2" wider, will bolt in place of your axle and have the spring perches in the right place(I believe). 4Runner axles have links and coils, though, so stuff would have to be cut off and welded on to go on an '87 Runner.
So, if you want to stay the same width as you are now, you're best off just modifying your housing with the notch, a touch of filler material welded and ground for the mounting surface(can be done without, I did. Not recommended, though), and the long e-locker studs from someone like the dealer or Marlincrawler. You'd use the axle shafts from your '87, also.
Probably the most difficult thing I ran into doing it on my Runner was getting the holes tapped straight for the long studs.

Thanks, After doing more research I think swapping out the 3rd and modifying the housing would work best. I've seen a lot of write up on that. I'll probably take it into have it done by a pro. I can't weld at all.

 

Like I said, the welding isn't really required. I toyed with the idea of using some JB Weld or something, but never really tried. Good luck!
