could the timing chain be loose? maybe the chain tensioners aren't tensing enough because of the low oil...I'm probably wrong...someone else? It could just be the normal 22re sound. valves lash maybe?

if it's carb'd, it's probably something in the air injection system- likely the diverter valve.

EFI or carb'd: if the noise is coming from the tail pipe, it could be a misfire during engine deceleration.

right. I forgot Toyota offered carbs through '88. Maybe the carb and/or air filter needs to be cleaned or replaced....Probably not it either...but just giving suggestions...

I should add that if it is the diverter valve making noise, if the truck has been emissions tested recently and isn't running poorly, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. The diverter valve basically receives air from the air pump and diverts it either to the exhaust manifold, or vents it (to the air filter housing, if i remember correctly) depending on engine operating conditions. So a puffing or putting noise may be heard when the valve vents the air out instead of sending it to the exhaust.
