87 pickup resto

Alright guys so I just picked up my first Toyota and am looking to build it as a daily. I worked professionally as a mechanic before I enlisted but wanted to bounce some opinions off of people more educated specifically with these trucks. As of right now the 22r is locked up and I’ve got it soaking in ATF/acetone to hopefully free it. I’ve resigned myself to having to tear it down for a rebuild and was wondering if any of the cheaper rebuild kits are worth a crap. Was also considering changing the cam to try and get a bit more out of it.

Welcome to Yotatech!
If I had to rebuild an engine, I would avoid cheap rebuild kits.

i wouldn’t suggest cheap parts for a rebuild. you want it to be durable, not throwaway. that said, while oem is the way to go, if there are some parts you can’t afford, or are no longer available, look to avoid china-made parts. try to source japan-made parts instead. there are decent quality non-oem parts out there, but you’ll need to spend some time sourcing them.

any specific brands you guys stick with? I’d like to get a complete kit and I don’t mind spending the money on quality if it’s got good reviews. I know engine builder used to be the go to but he’s no longer active so trying to find the next best thing.

first thing is you need to find out what needs to be replaced. then you can figure out where to source it.

Shes a piece of work but it will be worth it.
Keep an eye on craigslist too, theres still a couple older mechanics whove got 3 or 4 motors in their backyard.

Ive priced parts for a rebuild and found someone nearby who can do the block and head work and install new internals for less than the parts would cost me. Something to consider

I ended up finding a 85 22r out of a 2wd with a blown head gasket. 200 with the engine stand and I can’t complain. Got it all cleaned up and waiting on new timing set, oil and water pump, and all new gaskets. Along with A new clutch and flywheel. Planning on using the head from the 87 since it looks to be almost new I’ll post more pictures when I’m pulling it. I’ve also been recording most of it so far with my go pro and will be posting it to YouTube if anyone is interested. I’m already in love with how simple these trucks are.

Excuse the messy shop I’ve been running around like a chicken with its head cut off these past few weeks.
