As as it turns out, the fuel gauge actually does work. But it’s odd:
- Fuel gauge shows Full Bars on digital dash from 0-100+ miles
- After 100-150 or so it drops from Full Bars to Zero Bars (empty)
- From 150-250 or whenever it is actually empty, it shows Empty with the Fuel Light on
FWIW, my '87 non-turbo non-SR5 22RE has this exact same problem with (upgraded to SR5) analog dash. It's been doing this for a couple of years now.

As of now, I'm using the tripmeter like you would on a motorcycle, you know how much fuel is left by how many miles since last reset.

(yes, I'm back).

Actually, after reading the above again... mine fails a little different than this.

0-120mi Fuel gauge goes from full to nothing like you're getting 120mi out of a tank (starts moving at around 30mi, halfway around 70-80mi)
120mi-(infinity) Fuel gauge is pegged at empty
250mi (give or take) fuel light comes on.

So in my case, the fuel light sensor ("out of fuel") appears to be a different unit than the fuel level.

Any updates on this? I was told that you can get one for a 22RE and desolder the part with the copper winding and the wiper and resolder it to the 22RET float assembly after removing the worn out windings and wiper. My new unit is on order

There is a group in NY that’ll fix it for $150:

Comments from a guy on another forum:
“Got the fuel sending unit back and it works! Not bad for $150. They were quick on the repair, and it came back refurbished with epoxy paint on the top so it won't rust out.”

Red face

At different times over the years people Have rewound the copper wire .

The trick is getting the correct amount of turns .

Some worked great some kinda worked others not at all

Just so you know because the digital dash has the bars that move the dash looks for a voltage signal rather then changes in resistance
