87 4 runner turbo poor heat!!!
so it ws 5* F this moring and i let my truck run for like 50mins and it didn't even warm up at all!
my trcuks been getting colder and colder ye the temp around this are has been staying around 35 to 20 during the day yet it tkaes for ever to heat up!
in the past month i have done this work with little to no help with the heat!
timing chains set with guides !
T stat!
full flush
tune up and
timing!
yet still no heat till i take it out and heat on it!
even then it takes for ever to heat up

your telling me you ran your truck for an hour, and it didnt warm up? Even with a fully open thermostat, after an hour of running the motor, it should be up near operting temps...

Truck didn't warm up or heater doesn't?
Not much to the heating system, a control valve, heater core, blower motor, vent door thingies....

nope never checked the head gasket and it always ran fine and its not blowing any thing or leaking coolant its just not warming till i drive it! and it is like 20 to 30 degs out side
not talking about the heater core i'm talking the temp gauge

temp gauge is probably broken then. does the heater give out heat? then the engine is warmed up. if the gauge isnt moving at all its probably a broken wire.

wow i think i need to re write this!
truck takes along time to warm up!
this morning it was 5 degs* out side i let it run for about 35 mins and the temp gauge didn;t move!
About 8 mins after i started driving it! It moved one bar ! on my turbo digital gauge and then up more! what i wanna know is why is it taking so long to warm up!
I just went over alot of the cooling system its not leaking and i'm not losing coolant any where! IF its and HG i dunno to test/tell
the hose are not under and pressure as soon as i start it up like i see when alot of hg's go! there is no coolant in the oil and it not mixing in the coolant!
so you tell me!
I put on an toyota cap and t stat last week knowing it was about to get really cold out this week

If the coolant is still cold after 30 minutes - and I mean the coolant in the radiator, you might check your T-stat. It sounds like it's stuck open.
Alternately, if your hoses aren't routed correctly, you could be flowing water around the T-stat.

the only hoses i'm not 100 % sure is the heater core ones!
which some one blocked off the rear heater core due to the lines rusting
but i'm pretty sure that already been fixxed on my part!
but the only time it does not warm up is at idle why??
i have tested the t stat last on the oven and watched it open at like around 188 is there some where else it could get by passed and another kinda thing i'm not 100% sure on but what about the turbo water cooling lines any thing i should check there for?

prob want 192F thermo. flush the core, then back flush it, then flush it, and back flush it. or if anything put a electric fan in place of the mechanical one, and keep it off until the engine warms up. all i can think of, hope it helps!

even if the fan is running 24/7 it shouldn't matter. the coolant in the radiator isnt gunna go anywhere until the t-stat opens, which under proper operating conditions would be warmed up. Pull the t-stat, and test it in a pot of boiling water.

If the radiator isn't warm, you won't have heat.. Maybe post up some photos of your setup, I suppose it's possible that someone by-passed the heater core or is somehow working around the T-stat.
The turbo truck does have an additional cooling line on the radiator for the turbo.. no chance of anything tying into that, right?

Is the upper radiator hose actually cool to the touch after all this time running? Does the thermostat have a bleeder hole in it? Are you sure the gage sending unit is working right?
I just found out in the last few days that putting a small .180" -something bleeder hole in the t-stat in my truck made it not warm up at all....and that's with temps in the high 40s. Even a tiny .050" hole makes it come to temp slower. Before that I was having issues with the temp spiking on warmup.

Bump to see if you have found a solution. I have a similar problem with my recently acquired 88 4runner. My temp gauge barely moves a couple of needle widths above the cold mark even after driving for hours. The air blows cold. I replaced the thermostat, it has a newer radiator, and the radiator cap seems to be good. Coolant level seems good.
It doesn't take very many days of cold temps to get tired of it.

The same sort of problem solving applies.
If the top most radiator hose doesn't get hot, then something is causing the cooling system to run in open loop.
If it is hot, then it's likely a flow path problem...
So, after a 1/2 hour of driving, is that top radiator hose hot/warm? What's the water temperature?

its possible that both your heater core is blocked and that your temp gauge are messed. personally i dont trust the gauges on my truck, even after removing the stock temperature sender and putting in an aftermarket one my temp gauge still moves, go figure. you also might want to put some cardboard in front of part of the radiator, it will help keep your truck from overcooling.

Your heater core is no good..
I drove a work van where it NEVER got over the 1/4 tick mark ont he temp gauge at all. The heat worked marginally, hell-i blocked off over half the rad with cardboard to get that bit of heat. The core is probably done for..
