87 22RTE - Hard to Start
Hopefully there is a quick and dirty easy answer to this... One can only hope
I have a 87 Turbo Pickup. When I start the truck in the morning or even when it's warmed up.... I have to help it out by pushing down the throttle pedal to add gas. It will eventually start (2-3 three tries) but sometimes runs rough for a few seconds. After it runs with a little extra gas for a few seconds, it runs great and idles fine.
What should I check? Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

Clean the air filter, make sure the vane in the VAFM isn't sticking, test the fuel pressure specificly the does it hold pressure test. All of these are covered in the manual. There is also a handy flow chart you can follow for trouble shooting, which will cover other things like temp sensors ect.
You're not really "giving it gas", it doesn't work like a carb. The injector pulse is "semi" fixed during starting, it's corrected for air temp and battery voltage but not throttle position. What you are doing is making it "breath" easier and altering the airfuel mixture.
http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h43.pdf page 3, gives the details on the injector pulse during starting.

First your only giving it more air!!
all fuel is controlled by the injectors.
when was the last time this engine had a good tune up.air filter, cap, rotor, wires and plugs
you might also want to look into the cold start injector circuit make sure that is working like it should.
another thing your fuel could be draining back into the tank and the system needs to pressurize before it starts
when all is right these engines fire right up
