'87 22R truck won't idle
Ok, hi guys. First time here. You see, I've got a problem. I have a '87 4spd truck with a 22R carb'd engine. I've had a regular problem at startup where the engine would die right away. But it would always restart and run fine the second time. Within the past week, I've had a problem once or twice where the engine would start and die every time. I bumped the idle speed up and it got me home, but the idle surged HORRIBLY from about normal RPMS to engine-shaking-dead-rattle-slowness! That was Friday...it ran fine the next couple days but is giving me the same problem today. Again, the truck runs perfect at speed. I'm hoping this isn't some $500 tree-hugging hippie emissions sensor crap? Thanks folks!!!

Someone has to know. Please help us. I have the same problem with my 90 22re. Can some one tell me how to fix this. Just wondering what does the evap canister do? Seems when I mess with it. It stops sometimes.

I dunno...I haven't done jack on the truck since I got it ('bout 10,000 miles ago). I'm going to do a (probably) much-needed tune up today, might try fuel pump and filter, too.

I am running new bosch plugs. I have new wires, different coil, new fuel filter, new fuel pump, swapped air box lid thing. I think I'm gonna try cleaning and adjusting tps. hope it stops.

Changed plugs and wires today, runs a little rough but it's about the same as it did when it was behaving before...I hate the just wait for the problem to come up again, but I don't want to throw parts at the truck either... :pat:

Drove it after changing plugs and wires...felt like it added 20hp!
Ok, played with the idle speed and idle mixture, probably ÅÅÅÅed something up, but it seems to have a very consistent miss at idle, sounds like a machine gun going on and off. I've played with the timing and it doesn't seem to help...I'm assuming this has to be an idle or choke issue, since the truck runs FANTASTIC at speed.

sounds like the same thing as mine. I messed with the idle and the screw on the throttle body. my rpm jumping stopped. but when I stop at a light my rpms will drop to like 500 and then very slowly go back to 900. wierd I'll probly play with it somemore. what is that screw on the left side of the throttle body? my friend told me to try that

Where do you live at? if its real cold then it will take a while to warm up. My 87 5 speed has trouble starting if I park it facing up hill but other than that also try cleaning out the carb it might help

Ok, truck will run and drive fine but it seems to miss out and sometimes "jerk" at idle and lower rpms. It kinda sounds like the timing is off, but if I move the dizzy, it doesn't help...hmmm...
