"87" 22r idle and running problem

1987,Toyota p/u, 4x4, 22r, 2barrel carb, engine rebuild 6k ago, high test only.

This one has got me stumped.
Friday coming home from work the engine was running great. (40 minute drive)
Going from 2nd to 3rd gear the engine started running running very rough
and knocking.
It idles like a dying cow, when you rev it up it starts to try and smooth out but not 100%. With the higher rpm's it has a loud knocking sound. (not the sewing machine tap).

So far I replaced the plugs, dist cap and rotor. I dont see any broken or cracked vacum lines. I dont have a computer to get any engine codes.

Thanks for any help

Did a compression test on all 4 cyl's
1 and 2 are 180psi and 3 and 4 are 55psi. (with the plugs out) Took the valve cover off, nothing looks out of place. Turned to crank and all the valves are moving. Getting ready to take the head off now.

Took the head off and found the gasket was missing a piece between the 3 and 4 cyl.
Not sure how the gasket could just fail like it did? When I rebuilt the engine I had the block bored and planed, bought a new complete head from EB and used a felpro gasket set.

The 1987 22R does not have, store or use codes like the 22R-E. I have an 1987 22R as well.

Bad quality of gasket I'd venture to guess. Personally I go with OEM gaskets as much as I can.
