86 sometimes burn oil and sometimes it doesn't?
I have a 86 22re, how do I know I need to replace the engine? Here's the problem; when I change oil every 3000 miles, the oil seems to level itself to normal but when I go uphill or rev the engine high. The dipstick oil meter is in the middle. Any suggestions what I can do to narrow down the problem.

does it leak oil or burn it? That's the first thing you need to know.
If it is a leak, then replace the gasket or seal.
Are you checking the oil after going up the hill while it is hot, it takes time for the oil to return to the pan.
If it is burning oil and your only 1/2 a quart low after 3,000 miles, it sounds about right for a 20 year old engine. How many miles on it? I wouldn't replace the engine becasue your oil is a little low, that would be excessive. Have someone run a compression test on it, or DIY. If you are low on compression, then look into things more.
Otherwise keep on drivin.
