I have a 86 toyota pickup that failed smog the NO's were way to high. What could it be? Engine is 22r.

High NO is usually caused by excessive heat during combustion/lean condition.

I would try to retard the timing a bit. Also, make sure your thermostat is working correctly and coolant is topped off, etc, etc.

You can also "tweak" the airbox meter (or carb) a bit to richen it up.

EGR as well, make sure it is working perfectly and that all the ports/passages are totally clean and flowing well.

Might help to post what engine you have.
