86 4runner: AT problem.... drive seems to be out
Truck has been running fine, then when I stopped to see my sister, the truck decided it only wants go in reverse. When I shift into drive, it kind of feels like the parking brake is engaged. The engine doesn't rev like the tranny is slipping but once I get to about 15 MPH it drives like normal. I'm thinking the forward gears are going out but can't be certain.
Any ideas?

167k miles on the truck and engine, not sure about the tranny. Fluid level was good when I checked it earlier today (after this started) but was a little dirty.
I just tried this after reading your response and manually cycling through made all the difference. I was skeptical that the tranny was slipping because the engine felt like it was under load the whole time, so when I read your post I had a feeling you were right about it starting off in high.
As for the solenoid, how difficult of a job is replacing that? I'm limited on tools at the moment and would have to do this in the parking lot of my apartment complex. Of course I'll have to find a solenoid first :shrug:

Changing the solenoids is not too hard. You just have to drain the fluid and remove the pan. Once the pan is off, the 3 solenoids are easy to replace. They are mounted on the bottom of the valve body with a single 10mm bolt holding each one in place. There is also an electrical connector that needs to be unplugged. No biggy.
There is a remote possibility that there is a fault with the computer that controls the tranny or a wiring issue. But 99% of the time with that kind of mileage, it's the solenoids.
Change all of them if you can do it. They are about $50 each if you shop around.

I believe they are all the same. Mine need to be changed as well. I haven't gotten around to it. Mine won't shift when it's cold but magically heals when it warms up. I don't think that they cause any damage beyond being annoying.

Today the AT Oil light starting coming on and kind of pulsating. It did this when I first started up the truck this morning so I checked the AT fluid again and the level is still good. Is this an indication it could be the computer instead of the solenoids?

Well the AT Oil light comes on immediately when I fire up the truck. When I engage the turn signals, the AT Oil light blinks in sync with the turn signals. I unplugged the ECU under the console and drove a couple miles. Shifts through all the gears manually just fine.
Thoughts? Is this an electrical issue or the solenoids?

New development. After leaving the ECU unplugged for a day, I plugged it back in and went to bed. Got up this morning and left to get some coffee and the AT Oil light came on, then went out. I tried it in drive and it shifted automatically every time. Drove it stop and go for about 5 miles and no hiccups. I'm guessing there is just a short or loose connection in the console wiring. Is it possible for the ECU to "reset" like a modem or satellite receiver?
