86 22re turbo with prolems.

hi all, new to this site and looking for some help. my uncle has an 86 toyota 4x4 with the 22re turbo that he is willing to sell me for 800 or so, but its got problems. its got 180k miles and starts right up but then dies. try again and it just repeats this process, any ideas? fuel pump? This pickup has a automatic and it also has problems. it likes to shift from first to third and has been getting worse an worse. how much does it cost to rebuild one of these or may it just be an easy fix? even with these problems is it worth 800$? thanks in advance for any help.

I'd only consider purchasing it if you know how to work on cars and have a Daily Driver, But id try to look it over more and figure out how much its going to cost to make it run good before i would buy it, so if its an easy fix , say 200 dollars then it would be a good deal, but if its going to cost more than a couple thousand to make it run decent, id just pass it up.

i have a daily driver and i know how to work on cars. talked to a shop and they said it would be about 1200$ to work on the tranny. i think i could probably get one at a auto wrecker for less than that. the engine runs good if you can get it started. it seems like a simply fix.

For $800 it's a project truck.

I paid $1300(Cdn) for my auto turbo pickup. I rebuild the engine for about $1000(usd, from Engine builder, including a new head), and swapped the tranny for a 5-spd for about $700.

If you've got the time and the inclination to do so, I'd say go for it. They're fun little trucks when you get them going.

My x-cab has 52k orig and gets 33+ highway. All stock. Sometimes I think about getting something else but their mileage is not that much better. This is my only vehicle and I agree with Bill , they are fun trucks. My brother had a 86 reg cab carb , sold at 225k on it. He should have kept it. I couldnt believe the abuse it took and kept on going. He was a non maintenance guy.

If you're looking for a good daily driver, it's generally best to spend more up front and get a truck in better condition.

The exception is if you know exactly what's wrong with the truck and have a good idea of what it will cost to fix - or can fix it yourself with limited parts cost.

Tim @ DOA calls the 22RTE Really Terribly Expensive - things like the stock turbo are ridiculous in terms of cost, most of the parts - however - will swap with a 22re truck and are reasonably expensive and available.

That interchangability is the only reason I've been able to keep my project going! Hurrah for "cheap" parts

thanks for the input. i dont know what is exactly wrong with but it seems like an easy fix, maybe fuel pump or even somthing as simple as a fuel filter. i really like this engine and body style of pickup and have been lookin for one when my uncle said he would sell me his. i want it to eventually be a daily driver but i currently have another vehicle that is in great shape, it just gets 15 mpg...lol.
any ideas what a tranny rebuild would cost me? ive got qoutes from 1000 to 2400. i would like to keep the auto as i believe it is a better trany. thanks guy--

...ok, if you really want to keep the auto. I certainly don't know about "better"

In all honesty it would probably be cheaper to get a "new" one simply because auto trannies are horridly complicated and expensive to fix. But letting your fingers do some walking(ie opening up the yellowpages) is probably going to be your best bet for cost.

The A340F tranny that is in that truck was used in 86-87 turbos, then put on the shelf till '96. 96+ V6 4runners and Pickups use the same one, so you might be able to find one that way. You could probably get away with using an A340H out of an 88-95 Pickup/4Runner. But you would need the integrated T-case too. I don't think there is much difference in the preformance of the two.

The only problem that you're going to run into is that buying a non-running (or sorta running) project allows all the other problems to be masked..

Check the compresson on that motor before you buy it. Better yet, do a leak down test.

The other expensive item on that truck is the turbo. If at all possible, I'd want to pull the cold side tube off the compressor and check it for free play.
