86 22RE: NO click no start

Hi all,

Piggy backing on my previous thread I think was in the wrong spot (some pictures if interested): https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199/86-22rec-no-click-no-start-317631/

Long story short: 86 4Runner was starting fine since I got it, then one day nothing. Electronics were fine, could hear COR, no click or anything coming from the starter. Went through multiple rounds of replacing wires and ends. Clearly the starter fix had been done before but I couldn't make sense of the wiring, so I installed the Hot Shot Relay, but still nothing. I jumped the solenoid connections and starter fires right up. So I think the problem lies with the starter signal wire coming from the ignition switch. Theirs is a wire from the Hot Shot before the relay that is supposed to connect into the existing ignition wire. I connected the Hot shot Wiring to what was being used for the ignition signal from the key with the previous jerry rigged setup.

My question is: is it possible to wire directly to the starter wire on the ignition switch (this will connect to the "small purple" wire if you're familiar with the Hot Shot relay, which is supposed to splice into the existing ignition wire)? Does the ST connection on the ignition switch only send signal to the starter? Should I connect at the part closes to the key or downstream past the connector?

Would it be possible to wire in a button and bypass the ignition switch all together for the starter? Was looking at the "HOT SHOT PLUS" which has an engine bump start button just to have an out of the box solution to see if that will at least get me one step closer to starting.

Really appreciate any help with this one. Pretty out of my depth here but any guidance would be much appreciated.

extra Info if interested:
-learned doing some digging around and this truck was actually a M/T swap.
-clutch safety switch isn't even connected nor has it been connected in a awhile I don't think if ever.

This is my push button starter...
turn ignition on - push button = starter turning over like it's supposed to with 12 volts to it.

Good to know thanks! Did you have a relay or anything deviating from just a normal push button wiring to bypass the starter signal from the ignition switch?

Just ran an inline fuse... didn't mess with the ignition switch at all... the connections to the push button are all under the hood on the passenger side of the engine bay.
