I have done the EGR test and the engine does stumble. I even blanked it off for a few days and there was still no change.

Someone mentioned the AAP in the carb might be broken. I checked the diaphragm and it's still good - no gas in vac lines. I also replaced the BVSV that controls the AAP, no change. Will try blanking off the vac line to the AAP but not too optimistic.

I am completely out of ideas!!! AAAARGH.

I just noticed why is there two identical threads posted from you about this?

There's three. You missed one, it's a few threads down the list atm.

Sorry about the multiple threads, I'm new to this forum business.

After scouring the net following a hunch on the stats, my theory on why this worked was that with a 180* the engine was running rich, maybe because the engine was not completely coming out of 'cold mode'. I'm not sure. It was a $10 hunch that sounded plausible and was backed up by a few posts on the net.

Either way it worked. I tried almost everything else!

I got a 180 in mine with a 1/16" hole drilled into it because of a temp overshoot problem.

Kragen sold me the original replacement which was 180* and at that point I didn't even think to ask. Another local independent store who I really respect, said 180* was 'regionally correct' for my car. I called Toyota and asked if I could buy a 195* from them and he didn't even hesitate when he said yes - $20 though.

PepBoys gave me the choice of 180* or 195*, so who knows.

All my hunting around the net, it seems to be a contentious topic with guys disagreeing. LCE even promotes the 180* as being the right one for 'perfomance'.

We'll see what happens this weekend, I'm heading to Tahoe and Nevada - HOT!
